The subject of this post will make almost no sense to anyone over forty. Anyhoo, the kids at Connected Ventures (College Humor, Defunker, Busted Tees, Vimeo) posted this clip earlier this month and no surprise, it’s a big hit on Vimeo. Only one criticism, guys: Did you have to rub it in? We know we will never have that much fun at work in our entire lives. (via)

  1. Hm. It makes no sense to me and I’m only 34. It’s a bunch of college kids lip-synching this crappy song from the 90s by that one hit wonder band Harvey Danger. Okay, I mean, I get that. But what’s funny or entertaining about it?

  2. EnchantingWizardofRhythem  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

I get paid without going to work so take that buddy holly glasses wearing hipsters. I loathe that song…but that first girl is gorgeous like Zooey Daschnell (sp?)

  3. nick  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

how can you people not like this song??

  4. that’s a whole lot of attractive people in one place.

  5. ka-tet  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

mmmmmm Zooey, and her sister for that matter.

  6. seriously, it’s a fucking classic. i dont think “flagpole sitta” will ever get old for me.

  7. Maybe it’s a classic if you were 11 years old when it came out. For old farts like me, it’s simply annoying.

  8. hubbybubby  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

that was a waste of my time. whether you like that song or not, what was entertaining about watching people lip sync it? i want my 3 minutes back, stereogum. and it better not be in the form of a John Mayer post.

  9. it’s not the best song i’ve ever heard in my life, but harvey danger gets lifetime achievement points for releasing their last album entirely for free.

  13. lalala  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

I think it could be (and should be) easily and happily cut down to just that one guy being so jovial about being an amputee.

  14. Larry Flynt  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

Yeah, the initial chick is the only reason to watch that. You see her at the end when she jumps up and down? Yummy.

  15. burndownthemission  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

i imagine this is what it’s like to party in the dorms at vassar. and just like the rumors about overpriced private college campuses, don’t delude yourself into believing that any of these kids does any worthwhile fucking.

  16. Laura  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

maybe it’s just because i’m a college kid who enjoys that crappy one-hit wonder from the 90s, but i liked it.

  17. I guess the connected vultures are connected to ’97

these people are nerds and probably suck at ping pong and drinking.

  18. I was hoping never to hear that song again, but they all looked like they were having so much fun that I found myself smiling even though it’s a pretty pointless video.

  19. Access  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

    Man, That video Rocked! Kudos.

  20. Gotta agree with Jim, and the last Harvey Danger album, “Little By Little” is excellent. They do a great cover of “Oh! You Pretty Things” that you can find on iTunes.

  21. I think I just smelled a big whiff of JADED in this comments section! sheeeez.

haha sucks to be old, awesome to be our age, only get to say it one time before it passes you by, might as well. Dare I say it lends new poignancy to an already good period piece? Harvey Danger saw their own impending doom. crazy

  24. Anna  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

first girl has that amazing pretty/plain thing going on. rest of vid is boring

  29. Matthew  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

Terrible. The song is great, and Harvey Danger still makes great music, but that’s the most insufferable tripe I’ve seen on the internet… this week. Why the hell do I want to watch a bunch of preppy hipsters who are responsible for crappy websites act like retards in their office? This is the sort of thing best kept as a private joke between friends. I don’t want to see their shit.

But, uh, the first girl was real cute. It would’ve been slightly more tolerable if it had a slightly different concept, and the camera just followed the girl around. Oh well.

  30. Harryh  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

I’m forty seven and I get it, we can’t think of anything more creative than making a video of ourselves lip syncing to a song that was a hit when we were kids. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do that on YouTube before.
I think I would have chosen “Contort Yourself” or “Never Say Never”.
I was in a GWAR video where we did the fall down dead thing. Dawn of the Day of the Night of the Penguins I think it was.
And yes, I wish I had worked there when I was their age. Them’s some good lookin’ wimmens.

  31. Bijou  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

The best part was when he says, “stay dead!” at the end.

The worst part was when they didn’t.

  32. Black Guy  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

  33. dabean  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

That silf shirt is the shit.

    Sandwich I’d love to fuck

  34. I loved this. It looks very casual and random, but it was actually a very nice dubbing performance. I feel envious, I like fresh ideas. Someone should cover this song and use this as the video.

  35. I’m 42 and I got the title of this post.

    Also loved the video.

Now I’m gonna go yell at the kids to get off my lawn and drive around sitting really close to the steering wheel. Jeeze.

  36. bryan  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

Sorry but if you don’t like that song, not only are you over 40, but you somehow skipped the part of your life when you under 40.

  37. cherry  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

yea, that song is a for real anthem. i like the video. what i have gained from this experience is, it sucks to be old.

  38. White Guy  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

yes. This is what happens when a black guy leaves the room.

  39. b.LOUD  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

I wonder if those kids even knew about that song when it came out 10 years ago. How old were they, like 8-12 yrs. old then? Probably too busy watching Power Rangers back then.

BTW – To all those kids, you’re boss just called, YOU’RE FIRED!!!!!!!

  40. b.LOUD  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

  41. JoHnY  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

This was an off the cuff thing done after work. that’s why it’s fun. I don’t think they put that much/though effort into it!

  42. bryan  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

b.LOUD – I am 22 and it was my favorite song when it came out.

I’d be willing to bet their “boss” is in the video.

  43. fratster  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

This post was totally worthy of a 43rd comment…

  44. i’ve had just about ENOUGH of your vassar bashing!

i worked at a couple of these types o’ web joints between 1997-2000. massage thursdays..beer fridays..wacky furniture…etc. i was cynical about it then..but this shit makes me miss them places…

  46. Kurt  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

I’m 42, and I loved the energy, and I’d quit my job today to work there. Like that would ever happen. My upraised middle finger to the whole “over 40 you won’t get it” shite.

    Some mighty pretty folks, though.

  47. b.LOUD  |   Posted on Apr 30th, 2007

Hey Stereogum, way to piss off your 40-and-over demographic, eh?

  48. jojo  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

I LIKE THE FACT THAT THE GIRL LOOKS LIKE SHE’S ABOUT TO GO DOWN FROM THE PRE-LOADING PIC.

  49. Zayin_451  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

I’m honestly curious why someone shouldn’t like a song if it is performed by a band that didn’t play any other songs that were very popular.

The video is fun, in a “The internet is made to distract you for a moment” kindof way. Don’t think too hard about it. Just move on with your life.

  50. that girl looks like Mia Kirshner

  51. ughh, someone must’ve watched the last pitiful episode of october road..

  52. Christopher  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Everybody calm down – they obviously came in on a Saturday to film it.

  53. Mehdi  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Hmm, This makes me want to go watch my Peep Show DVD. The Dude Brothers again!

  54. Stephen  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Eh. Not great, but then again, what’s to complain about? It’s not like they made anyone pay to watch it. A fine little distraction.

And that girl is really hot.

  55. Damn, now THAT’S a job.

  56. I think we can all agree that the chick is hot and leave it as that.

  57. Flagpole Sitta may be a little dated… but I generally don’t skip past it when it comes up on the iPuhd.

Also, Harvey Danger’s recent album has some quite respectable tracks on it. “Cream and Bastards Rise”, for instance, is as enjoyable a powerpop song I heard in 2006.

  58. Allen  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

F*ck the over 40 nonsense. I am 42 and I thought it was a blast.

  59. Larry Flynt  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

“don’t delude yourself into believing that any of these kids does any worthwhile fucking.”

Hey, if I could fuck that chick even once, it would be very much worth my while.

  60. Billy T  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

I spotted Bette Midler at 2:49

  61. hiconcept  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

    Good fun for all.

    Side question:
How big an asshole do you have to be to request time back when you were looking to blow it on random bullshit in the first place? Can I ask for the oxygen you breathed while commenting back?

  62. krys  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

“Is this what happens when a black person leaves the room?”

It’s 4:09 am and I think I just woke my apartment-mates up laughing at that. Honestly the best comment ever.

Other than that – meh. I was expecting something interesting to actually happen.

  63. I’m 98, and I get it.

  64. Michael  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

You really shouldn’t deal ageist cards.
I will be 40 in 1.5 years and I am the same music fan
I’ve always been. More so. So shame on you.

  65. dannygutters  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

why is out of shape skinny the new hot? Ah well, fugly chicks need love too huh.

Anyway, aren’t memebers of harvy danger now your darlings the long winters?

  66. Hilarious! I know a girl who looks a lot like the first one pictured… freaky. Anyway, I love the song.

  67. josh  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

that girl is a lesbian. sucks for you guys!

  68. everyone’s a lesbian these days

  71. bobfrombob  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

I’m closer to 50 than I am to 40 and I don’t get that at all. Why are they all so angry? And why can’t they stand still – are they on that Ecstasy stuff? And why not use a good band, like Kansas, or Boston, or Chicago, or Flipper?

  72. I’m nowhere close to forty, and even I have appreciation for Kansas, Boston, and Chicago. But you wouldn’t want these guys to ruin it, would you?

  73. ryan  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

“And why not use a good band, like Kansas”

That was supposed to be ironic, right?

  74. peepers  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Thanks for embedding a different video. I read all of these comments about a super delicious, hot girl, watch the video, and nothing. That is the video everyone is talking about right?

  75. ferri's girl 4 life  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

amanda ferri is a straight up lezbo.

  76. velcro strap  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Wait that was kinda fun. The British tv show Peep Show uses this song as their title theme.

  77. a: you people are looking into this way too deep. someone will always have a better job than you and also be prettier. get over it.

b: black guy comment ftw!!! that was better than the video.

  78. jed2  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

What’s funny to me is these people obviously think they’re cool, yet fail to realize how ultimately lame the 90s were. I feel privledged for being just the right age to remember the 80s and the 90s equally for compare and contrast.

It’s just funny to be old enough to feel like you’re not cool anymore, but then realize how uncool hipsters in their 20s actually are today, and suddenly realize that you’re still cooler than them. I win.

  79. jed2  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

I should add that I meant “hipsters who ARE 20″, not IN their 20s, as I’m only just out of my 20s myself. Basically, those poor unfortunate souls who cannot remember Atari 2600.

  80. philly>nyc  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Which is the better movie: The Faculty or Disturbing Behavior

    I say Disturbing Behavior.

    Thoughts?

  81. jed2  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

I’m gonna go with the Faculty on this one, chief.

  82. KatieB  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Where are all the black people?

  83. JED2, I can only say, “EXACTLY?

  84. I wish I worked there. Oh God do I. A bunch of cuties there.

  85. jed2  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Tony, I never expected to feel that way, it’s just that hipster culture now is just so very lame. So very lame.

  86. jed2…you make me sad. what makes you think that these people all thought the 90′s were awesome? because they sang one song? and a good song at that? right. whatever helps you sleep at night, ya big 30 year old you.

that video was great, so is this thread. it’s the polar opposite of the thread over at vimeo. i think it brought some people over there to tears.

also, im with hiconcept on the absurdity of people asking for their time back after watching that. “college humor lip dubs harvey danger.” pretty accurate title…

  87. Steve Sanders  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Love that song, as embarassing as that is.

And the girl is extra-specially cute.

  88. ryan  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

“amanda ferri is a straight up lezbo.”

    sigh. it’s true.

  89. jed2  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Adam, I’m just being cheeky. I mean, I also mean it…I feel bad for people who were 11 years old in 1997. They got some of the worst pop culture in 40 years as their childhood memories. But it’s not important, obviously. Don’t take it personally. You’ll be thirty soon enough and you may feel the same way. Or not!

  90. to the person who asked for a myspace link:
    http://www.myspace.com/amandafromtheinternet

  91. This video completely sums up College Humor. People with zero creativity taking something someone else has done and then tossing in equal measures of hot chicks and friends with wacky T-shirts and voila! Instant hilarity. Youtube is full of this crap, so seriously stereogum, was this posted as part of some cross-promotional deal with them or something?

  92. nick  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

fun fact: this video was designed specifically to annoy people who take themselves too seriously

    the more you know

  93. Larry Flynt  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

    “that girl is a lesbian.”

Well, it’s not like I would’ve had a snowball’s chance in hell to bed her if she were straight or bi. In fact, my fantasies of her with another hot chick will be even more vivid now!

  94. Miles  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Harvey Danger are my favourite band. This video is pretty ace.

    JUST THE FACTS.

  95. I think it’s pretty awesome and I’m good at ping pong, drinking and beer pong.

This song never gets old for me either.

  96. R.T.Herrera  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

Absolutely great. Good work. Everyone kept a straight face and just rocked. By the way I’m 55.

  97. ejane  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

  98. jed2  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

    Hey e.j., I ain’t jealous. I don’t want a job.

  99. D.C.  |   Posted on May 1st, 2007

And the people were pretty suckey too.
Does anybody know why you can’t get the Harvey Danger version of that song on I-Tunes????
