With Johnny Marr off turning his seasoned tricks for the Jarmans, Modest Mouse recruited ex-Grandaddy guitarist Jim Fairchild for this twelve date tour. Seems it was a good choice. These shows are being hailed as fiery and focused, which couldn’t always be said about those Marr-dest Mouse sets. The list of songs touched each point on the discog (Lonesome‘s “Trailer Trash,” four from The Moon…, two from This Is A Long Drive…, five from Good News), with only “Education” and “Dashboard” from We Were Dead…, all of which is good news for people who like bashing that latest record’s direction. Also performed: new song “Satellite Skin.” The tour wraps up in the first week of March; sounds like a good one for lovers of deep cuts. Joining Modest Mouse in this set of shots is openers Japanese Motors and Mimicking Birds, all by photog Andrew Youssef. The rest of this tour’s dates and last night’s setlist:

  1. The Moon is their best album; very very glad to see that 3rd Planet is back

I don’t know why everyone hated that last album, I thought it was really good.

I wish I would have seen this setlist when I saw them last year.

  3. is that guy from the cure still playing with them?

is it pretty much standard that they NEVER play either of the songs that got them semi-mainstream fame? just curious.

i wish MM was still ‘cool’ i.e. write more lonesome crowded west-esque tunes

Um…that’s not the whole setlist. After “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes”, they played “Parting of the Sensory”, “Baby Blue Sedan”, some song I’ve never heard (new?), and “Dramamine”. Did you leave early or something?

  7. mimicking birds = chimney sweep = sweet soft truth

I just saw them in Oxford. It was so much better than when I saw them last. There was great energy on stage. I like the new addition:)
