If there’s one thing aside from shameless self-promo Kanye can say he’s learned by Graduation day, it’s how to pick a sample — and on “Stronger,” Mr. West bundles both skills quite tidily on the way to his MC degree. Daft Punk-ophiles got psyched when Kanye announced his forthcoming LP would have a track sampling “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” (and a vid starring the robots themselves — make a note for his next award show stage crashing speech), sure to hit with club kids and indie folks alike. There’s a high-quality radio rip floating around, and its invasive “This is a Mark Ronson Authentic Shit exclusive sive sive sive” DJ announcements are offset by hearing Kanye offer that “you can be my black Kate Moss tonight.” Grab your blow and your smokes and take him up on it at Nah Right.

RELATED: What would you do if you had access to the Daft Punk offices? If you answered “film yourself wrestling in your skivvies next to the deconstructed robots and Daft Punk paraphinelia,” then a) something is wrong with you; and b) head here for vid from from a Swedish TV duo called La Vida Locash at the Daft Punk offices. Swedish-styled Cribs, with less pants. (Thanks, Will)

UPDATE: After the jump, the theatrical trailer for Daft Punk’s Electroma, released this year in France, Japan, and Australia, US release pending. After premiering at Director’s Fortnight, Wiki says “the film was unfavorably compared with Gus Van Sant’s Gerry and Vincent Gallo’s The Brown Bunny for its extensive hiking sequence.” So, uh, hiker-haters beware.

Kanye is one of the most overrated producers ever, and one of the shittiest rappers in the history of humanity.

That said, every once in a while he comes out with a fucking banger. Like this.

  2. calebs  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

wow, i totally believe in dragons now!

i like it better than ‘touch the sky’ which reminds me to remind you to do update how Lupe’s balls are doing.

It sounds like something A-Trak cooked up, and it’s something outside of Kanyeezy’s usual bag of tricks…but it works.

I’m curious to see if the hardcore hip hop community will accept it. I think they’re still trying to wrap their head around the Busta Rhymes sample of Technologic.

Is there a stream of this somewhere? I’m at work and can’t download.

Nevermind, found a stream but it’s not clean.

sounds like every other kanye song ever. i dont think anyone familiar with the daft punk song will like this.

  7. no digital love  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

i hate that they did this. i love daft punk more than fat kids and their candy, but this is fucking tacky. and they should have turned down his offer just based on his disrespect for their fellow countrymen. disappointed guys… very disappointed.

have you heard the young folks one? Fader has a stream of it:

    a damn shame.

A MESSAGE TO ALL IN THE HIP HOP INDUSTRY:

Just because you find yourself at a loss for musical development does not mean that you have to go and grab anything with a bass-line in indie rock or techno. I know that your mentality simply suggests that because fans of hip hop usually don’t listen to indie rock and techno that they’re going to eat up these bastardized beats as being new or innovative, or maybe that using this music will give you more credit with indie rock and techno fans. But to all of it, I beg of you – stop using some of my favorite music for your half-assed creations!!!!!!

  9. KingHater  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

Relax, people. It’s just taking one thing and importing it into a different market. It’s what hip hop has always done. And when it works, it works.

By contrast, the Young Folks sample would be an example of a beat that doesn’t work at all.

And I’m sure the money helped the Daft Punk guys with their mortgages. They made the track, let them earn off their work. Whatever.

what happens to my identity if black people start listening to daft punk?

  11. cedricL  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

in my opinion kanye friggin kills it on the entire new mixtape. the more you try to erase him etc, whatever yorke says on that song ‘ye sample.

that video is hilarious as well. “hey you’re in daft punk toilet!” = classic.

  12. melvin j  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

haha, I like the fact that those Swedish guys wrestled the daft punk-aupair and crazy things like that and didn’t just walk around with their mouths open and acted impressed.

  13. Jimmy  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

I cant appreciate “Stronger” without wanting to stop it and actually listen to the Daft Punk song.

Its more of a novelty song to me, Young Folks just doesnt work period.

  14. elton  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

This song is really good. What an awesome sample.

  15. elton  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

I thought the “Young Folks” song was good too. It’s Kayne west rapping over peter bjorn and john, i dont really see where you can go wrong with that.

what happens to my identity if black people start listening to daft punk?

Posted by: worried at June 4, 2007 1:18 PM

Psst. I’m a black female that listens to Daft Punk. I know, your brain just like totally exploded right?

  17. Evan  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

He has done this so many times. Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Daft Punk. The list goes on and on. All of his best singles do that in a way that will have everyone on the dance floor. A lot of his fans don’t even know or care how directly he samples. They just can’t resist his beats. Killer beat. He takes the best parts of already great songs, adds drum beats, and viola. If he was a one-trick pony producer, I would be upset. He’s made some hot tracks on his own though.

I refuse to listen to his cover of Young Folks. Seriously though can you think of a more mainstream rapper with higher indie cred? Jon Brion, Thom Yorke, Peter, Bjorn and John, Daft Punk, his love of Franz Ferdinand? He’s a douchebag of course, but he’s onto something there. Maybe he can learn to sample in a more artful way. I’ll give his next couple of singles a pass than my patience will start to run out.

  18. there is a screening copy of electroma already leaked…ii’m sorry but i saw it…it’s good but there is definitely a whole lot of walking and driving. and more walking, and more driving. but i like robots, and i like daft punk, so it was alright. but coudl’ve been awesomer.

  19. nae bad, like

  20. does anyone not remember busta rhymes butchering daft punk in his song “touch it?” using the lyrics from technologic. granted the impressive swiss beatz were behind it but still. That song was awful, give credit to kanye using it rather well. As for the hip hop industry being down – which I agree with – the same could be said for rock, indie or whatever. Things havent been good since like 05 in most genres, let it fly

  21. tmccool  |   Posted on Jun 5th, 2007

guys, i dont want to make you all pee in your pants, but get this: DAFT PUNK SAMPLED OTHER BANDS. Download Cola Bottle Baby by Edwin Birdsong if you’re dying for proof. the mixtape is pretty awesome… it has daft punk, PBJ, kanye doing a borat impression… its so good. i can’t wait for the new album to drop. if you can’t handle artists sampling other artists, you should just stop listening to music entirely, especially daft punk.

    bitches.

  22. Carlos D.  |   Posted on Jun 5th, 2007

This one snippet of “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” – the higher pitch part of it’s chorus – is too much of an amazing sample for this song. Normal to above par Kanye rapping built around a Puff Daddy and the Family-quality chorus doesn’t cut it.

DP themselves used this specific part of the song to seriously orgasmic results in their touring live set from Coachella and all last year.

I’ll let you judge for yourself: 05 – steam machine vs around the world.mp3 – 12.18MB

That’s a link to the Daft Punk live track where they mix “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” with “Around The World” to mind melting results:

I’m still excited about Graduation though – and truly believe he’ll have worked himself into an artistic paranoia attack again and yield good results.

Remember “Diamonds From Sierra Leone” didn’t sound that cool till we heard it in context.

  24. Prestige  |   Posted on Jun 5th, 2007

does no one think that the outro breakdown in New Workout Plan kind of sounds like daft punk? because it kind of does. so maybe he’s just a fan? I’d be excited to rap on this track.

  25. Anna  |   Posted on Jun 5th, 2007

Holy shit, Mark Ronson is talking in the most irritating, grating manner imaginable. Shut the fuck up, dude.

  26. Greg  |   Posted on Jun 8th, 2007

eh… sampling is fine, but i just don’t think Harder Faster works for hip hop. there are fare more shameless ripoffs of classic songs (see Eminem’s use of Deam On, in which he keeps virtually the whole song unchanged, including the goddamn guitar solo).

  27. CarrotDude  |   Posted on Jun 8th, 2007

    @ worried

If you think black people only listen to rap, r&b, and gospel music, then you should REALLY get out more. Christ…how stupid are you.

And to further destroy your stupidity, I implore you to not only read up on the beginnings of Daft Punk, but house music as well. Judging by your comment, you will be shocked.

As for this song, it really does nothing for me. But I’d rather listen to this than that crunk garbage currently stomping on the burial plot of hip-hop.

  28. I really dont care what makes it or who makes it normally, music is music, you listen to what you like- but Kanye is a hypocrite and I don’t wanna see my boys fall in that hole of shit. :/

  29. When did people stop making their own beats to rap on top of?

  30. Sarah  |   Posted on Jun 11th, 2007

Carlos, that is a great track. Thank you for sharing/bringing it to our attention.

  31. unrulyg  |   Posted on Jun 27th, 2007

what there are some seriously racist people on this board.

#1 Daft Punk samples African America MUSIC and further more as a BLACK person that listens to Detroit Techno, Disco, House, hip-hop etc..- where the fuck does Daft Punk have anything to do with Indie music- If you listen to this first album and the song “teachers” i DONT hear one indie band that they give a shout out to- however i do hear i hear a ton of BLACK DJS and Producers from Chicago Detroit etc

Daft Punk is ELECTRONIC Music- so all you fucking indie kids hating and trying to call Daft Punk indie music can fuck off. In fact they have more in common with Hip-Hop then they do indie

Nothing happens to your identity if black people start listening to Daft Punk. Not sure if I should be offended because i’m part black…anywho…

I’ve been on this shit for years, being more familiar with every other genre than hip-hop. Stop being a bitch about Daft Punk and Kanye West working together. Some good can come out of it.

  34. 1 Live Crew  |   Posted on Jun 30th, 2007

First off, Kanye didn’t really produce this track. This is A-Trak all the way. That’s not speculation, it’s a fact. Secondly, I’ve loved Daft Punk since ’96. I’ve seen them perform twice. I’ve seen them DJ a handful of times. I love all their side projects. I’ve even met Thomas and Guy-Manuel in person…but what fucking right does that give me (or anybody else) to say who they can or can’t allow to sample their music? If you love Daft, who cares who samples them! You talk about “‘butchering’ and ‘this song sucks’”…who cares what you think. While you’re in the corner of the club, pissing and moaning like a Star Trek geek because this song is on, heads are out on the floor dancing and having a good time. Sometimes a million music nerds CAN be wrong.

    A W S O M E !!!

  36. 1 Live Crew  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

My only problem with this track is Kanye’s week lyrics. A song with such a bangin’ beat, dope sample, and a title like “Stronger” NEEDS better lyrics than “What would you do for a Klondike/ I’ll tell you what I’d do for a blonde dike”…come on, man. WEAK! I can’t wait to get the instrumental to this, though.

  37. Dazed  |   Posted on Jul 6th, 2007

i figure if your writing a comment, you’ve listened to the song at least a couple times, and havn’t changed it. the song pounds. its a totally jam-able song

  38. uber-nerd  |   Posted on Jul 12th, 2007

this is a brilliant song and not one person i know fans of daft punk or otherwise have a bad word to say about it. weak lyrics, bad rapping, who produced it blah blah stop whining seriously. Its catchy fun and can get people dancing who cares about how the hardcore hip hop community perceive it?when was kanye ever considered hardcore hes completely mainstream!RELAX EVERYONE AND JUST LISTEN TO IT AND APPRECIATE IT FOR WHAT IT IS..AN ENJOYABLE SONG! and if you cant do that go listen to the original and stut up!

  39. usually kanye kinda sucks cause all he can do is sample shit, plus hes a fucking racist, but this is definately a banger the song is sick, i just wish i could get a versionwithout that fagget frech dude talking….LIL WAYNE – BEST RAPPER ALIVE

  40. To all you haters: quit being crying little bitches. Its a good song to listen to. If it makes you change the way you think about daft punk then you are a retard. Stop over-thinking it, its just a song. Throw that on in a club or at a party and its the hottest song right now. But then again im sure most of you dont go to clubs or parties.

  41. CWEBBZ  |   Posted on Jul 21st, 2007

Anybody hating on Kanye for sampling techno better learn the history of Techno and House music.Techno was created by BLACK PEOPLE in Detroit and House music was created by BLACK PEOPLE in Chicago!.Please know your history before making stupid remarks like this..

Remember, all of that rave culture in Europe was fueled by techno/house music created by BLACKS!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJPdVVOmbz4

  43. yea u guys r pretty funny talkin crap about kanye hes a beast and he could come up wit as many beastly songs as he wants hes got 3 rite now such as stronger, i still love h.e.r, and can’t tell me nothing. no matter how old they get theyre still awesome

  44. dhbnjtjtujh  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2007

I still like daft punk, but im afraid this ruined the track ‘Harder, better, faster, str–ger for me, i cant listen to it without thinking of this travesty, if it had been done well, i would have maybe appreciated but the fact is, the genres clash, Daft punk is way too experimental for the likes of rap, especially lacklustre rap, the heavy bass completely destroys any mix from HBFS and makes it overall pointless, busy and ruined, a shambles. and thus they sell their soul to the rap industry *sigh*

  45. Kanye is shit. The song Daft Punk – Stronger (Feat. Kanye West) is however a good song by the man. It is unfortunate that he seems to be taking the credit for the song though. A third grader speaking over any Daft Punk track could do just as well. Leave it to Kanye to take credit. Even on his myspace it says the song is entitled Stonger by Kanye West. What a piece of shit.. He owes everything to Daft Punk on this one.

  46. chantelle  |   Posted on Aug 25th, 2007

  47. FUCKKANYE  |   Posted on Sep 8th, 2007

daft punks whooooooole album with that single on it is about taking other peoples music and selling it to a new audience

    people dont fuckin understand!

u have to see the whole video that goes with daft punks album “discovery”

and what west did is terrible. he didnt make ne of the music.

rapping is THE EASIEST form of songwritting

    so why worship him?

    huh america?

what the fuck is wrong with u and ur short dick

  48. nkriss  |   Posted on Sep 17th, 2007

I’m just tired of loving a song that not many people know about it, and then some no talent “artist” (whether rapper of pop-singer) come and remake it. Of course the remakes are horrible compared to the original but because it has some no talent famous person’s name on it everyone thinks it good now. I bought Discovery when it came and have listened to it for years. I just can’t wait till someone puts their amazing talents into remaking Da Funk

  49. walter benjamin  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2007

look, the songs good. if your mad because he rapped over daft punk then you’re really mad at the fact your band that makes your feel special is getting some mainstream recognition by people that don’t spend hours searching for new music so they can feel “different” some way (you’re special or different – you’re not a snow flake – your a loser). so what if you heard a song first or you know where the sample came from – get a life, it’s good. kanye makes good rap; songs that you can dance to. kanye over that young folks song is awesome too. “rapping is THE EASIEST form of songwritting” – what are you an idiot. being elitist about music is on par with fascism – get over yourselves. kanye’s new album is good. end of story.

  50. d3fiant  |   Posted on Sep 28th, 2007

WHAT? BLACK PEOPLE DON’T LISTEN TO DAFT PUNK?!! MUTHAFUCKA, i HAVE LIKE 4 OF THEIR ALBUMS PLUS INTERSTELLA 5555!!! PEOPLE WHO POST COMMENTS LIKE THAT ARE LITTLE WEAK-ASS KRACKERS WHO WOULD NEVER TALK SHIT TO A BLACK MAN IN PERSON CUZ HE KNEW HE’D GET HIS ASS KICKED. FUCK YOU IGNORANT ASS BITCHES!

  51. Electronic  |   Posted on Sep 30th, 2007

Everyone needs to calm down. I love the fact that people are talking about this so much though. To those hating on kanye…the song is catchy, well-produced, fun, and easy to dance to. In my book, that means it’s good. Are they the most brilliant lyrics ever dropped? No…but who said that was the intention?

What’s exciting about this song, though, is that we’re starting to see a cultural fusion. Just like country and blues fused to make rock ‘n roll, we have hip-hop and electronica fusing to make something new today. Hate all you want, but realize that it’s gonna blow UP. You already see it out on the dance floor with Timbaland, Kanye, etc., but whether you’re into it or not, I think it’s just the beginning of something huge, so just deal with it.

  52. Ivy la Sangrienta  |   Posted on Mar 2nd, 2008

I’ve always thought Kanye West to be an overrated, hype-based boring typically American “artist”. I don’t dislike him, cos he really doesn’t register that much on my radar. Dull dull dull.

  53. Kanye Has No Talent  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2008

Before you even think about it! I’m BLACK from the waist down and knees up bitches! KUNTe “Kinte” Kanye has no talent without others. This guy is only known because he self promotes by being arrogant ie saying stupid shit like “I’m definitely in the history books already.” Like if kids read about him after reading Christopher Columbus? OK Kunte Kinte we know how you made it to the top, by being in bed with music pimp pushers like Universal Music Group, yes Roc a fella belongs to UMG.

A real lesson of the history books is that these mega record companies force stations worldwide to play their music talentless hookas aka “SAMPLING” MC artists. Whether the public likes them or not these force tactics do get people to eventually start liking it because it seems popular and people go out and buy the crap. That’s how advertisement works and that’s the only reason Kanye is big and Daft Punk is not, simply based on record alliances (those who can push your product up) not talent.
