Massachusetts legally starts gay marriages today. A friend describes the scene last night at Cambridge City Hall:

There were 10,000 people on the lawn (Cambridge was the only city to decide to open city hall at midnight to hand out licenses). It’s so funny how liberal the city government is — they had a big party inside with wedding cake, and decorations, etc… So everyone gathered outside and just celebrated and then as each couple came out with their marrriage license everyone cheered for them and threw rice at them and blew bubbles. Everyone brought all these signs, but this one guy had the best sign: it was on a long wooden stick, and just said, “Yay!” And every time he raised it in the air, the whole crowd yelled, “Yay!” There were Klan people too, but they gave up after like half an hour and left.

Gallagher's cold 'happy/sad' reaction to gay newlyweds
From Mark Oppenheimer's lengthy profile of anti gay-marriage crusader Maggie Gallagher in Salon. At one point, breaking from my script of questions, I interrupted her to ask if, despite all of her fears about same-sex marriage, she didn’t find it ...

  1. I go to school in the Boston area (Brandeis University), and my friend headed down last night around 1 in the morning to see what was going on. He said the people in Cambridge were awesome, and that he didn’t see any Klan members/protestors (so they must have left pretty early).

On a related and funnier note, I was at my friend’s apartment watching TV around 8 or 9 (maybe 10? whenever that set of local news comes on) and we had just finished up the Simpsons repeat and Fox News came on, and they were doing a segment about Provincetown, the gay mecca of the Northeast. And they showed these two girls walking down the street, holding hands and my friend’s girlfriend sits up and yells, “She’s not gay, she goes to Brandeis!” Turned out the girl had been in her movement class and was confirmably not gay. She was just shopping with a friend.

Kudos, Fox News, for never straying from your expected standard of news!

  2. From now on, if anyone ever asks me if I’m gay, I’m going to say, “I’m not gay, I go to Brandeis.”

we have had a couple of gay mayors and officials growing up in cambridge. i think that we maybe were the first to have a “gay club” project east or something like that at cambridge rindge and latin. even the republican governers daughter (weld) was in the club even though she wasnt gay.

  4. I am not really sure how liberal they are there though, I heard it announced recently that they only plan on issueing marriage licenses (for gays and lesbians) for residents of Massachusetts which makes no sense at all. I think they may as well take a stand and be the gay marriage capital of the world, plus think of all the dollars that could flow into that state for not only license fees but the caterers and cake makers, not to mention the all important wedding band.
