Once upon a time, this thing called ‘broadcast journalism’ got started, and at some point thereafter (probably its inception), producers and anchors realized that scaring the piss out of parents and instilling a culture of fear was really great for ratings! Which are great for advertisers, which are great for paying for more reports to keep parents hooked to the news and petrified. So yeah, we’ve seen this sort of report on the suicidal tendencies of kids who have “swoop” haircuts, wear guyliner, and/or sing for My Chemical Romance, but we thought you’d need to see a fourth version of it just to get the point home. Parents, your children are going to cut themselves. The big take home? “Ask your kids more about their music.” Watch at CBS 47.

I?m a school nurse & you wouldn?t believe how many of the ?emo? kids cut. They call themselves ?emo,? by the way. We?ve sent at least a dozen kids to the local psychiatric hospital for self-injury and suicidal ideation just during this school year. About 90% of those kids were self identified ?emo? kids. I was pretty confused about the whole ?emo? thing until one of the kids showed me the website http://whatisemo.bravehost.com/. Once I saw that site, I understand the issue much better now; please take the time to view this and protect yourself and your loved ones.

I really think that you should stop saying that a ROCK band like coheed and cambria cause people to cut themselves, when in reality I was SAVED by they’re music, it brought me out of a depression and saved my life. I didn’t listen to any of this emo crap but still felt like killing myself until my friend showed me coheed. Just because a band sings in a high pitched voice does not mean they’re emo.
