Atlas Sound - Bedroom Databank Vol. 4

About those Bedroom Databank mixtapes Bradford Cox home recorded and released throughout early last week (and a fourth on Thanksgiving): He had no right to distribute them. Or at least not Volumes 2 through 4, according to Sony Music who sent Bradford a letter to that effect and removed the files from the internet. (Bradford has since re-upped them.) Sony sent Cox a letter which he reproduced on his site and we’ve reproduced below on ours, but the strange twist is this: These are four volumes of original Bradford Cox recordings, Bradford being an artist signed to 4AD (via Deerhunter) and Kranky (via Atlas Sound) but with no relationship to Sony Music. Cox did file two covers, one of which being the possibly Sony-controlled track “This Wheel’s On Fire” by Bob Dylan & The Band, however that was on Vol. 1, which is the one volume Sony did not have scrubbed from the web. Says Bradford:

Apparently Sony Music Owns my bedroom. Feel free to call or email and let them know what you think.

I can understand them requesting for me to remove a cover but the only one I can imagine that happening with is Dylan. Which was on Vol. 1. Which was not deleted. I am re-uploading the files now. I’ll put new links in the posts.

  1. Sony Music is drunk with power! Who will Facebook stalk the watchmen?!

But really, even though I have only a poet’s understanding of the law (ie, no understanding whatsoever), this sounds like it cannot possibly be legal on Sony Music’s part. Unless they own blogspot or something?
