UPDATE: Win’s statement…

“We are very proud of the record we made and feel incredibly blessed that so many people have gotten it! For those of you who don’t understand how gambling works, if something is 100 to 1 odds and you put down 10 dollars, you win 1000 dollars… I’m just saying.”

  1. Ugggh… More irrelevant garbage. It’ll be the SAME performances, from the SAME “artists” we see on every damn award show now. Can you really equate what everyone else does in the Album of the Year category with the Arcade Fire? We all know they won’t win. I’m not a huge fan of this album and I’m really sick of the hype around them everytime they put out something, but they look like geniuses in this case.
    One interesting category:
    Best Hard Rock Performance
» Alice in Chains – “A Looking in View”
» Ozzy Osbourne – “Let Me Hear You Scream”
    » Soundgarden – “Black Rain”
» Stone Temple Pilots – “Between the Lines”
» Them Crooked Vultures – “New Fang”

  2. The Grammy’s suck so much I kind of wish Arcade Fire weren’t nominated.

  3. “But Win, what if you win? Wouldn’t it be weird?”

  4. Vampire Weekend was robbed in the Best New Artist category!!!

On the other hand, this post is of utmost importance for future Jeopardy players:
“How many times does a band have to play in the Madison Square Garden to be considered for a best album award in the Grammys?”

    • why best new artist? they have two albums

    • Although Vampire Weekend probably should have gotten best new artist at some point, they are not a new artist this year. And let’s try to keep them away from the Grammy’s so they don’t have to suffer an embarrassing defeat at the hands of someone who doesn’t deserve to beat them.

      • Ehhh, I know that. it has not stopped the Grammy from nominating people before, like Silversun Pickups last year(?)

I care so much about these things that I keep an accurate track of them in my mind!

  6. as much as I usually couldn’t care less about the grammys, I have to say, despite the fact that they will almost certainly lose out to Drake or some shit for Best New Artist, I’m really pleased that Mumford & Sons are even nominated, cause the publicity they’ll get from that will hopefully enable them to play my hometown next tour #selfishness

    • Best New Artist should go to Drake. I’ve always thought of Mumford & Sons as a wanna-be Avett Brothers.

      • oh I didn’t mean to imply Drake shouldn’t win, though personally I am completely uninterested in him, god knows anyone would be preferable to Bieber. I’m not even gonna go into whether Mumford deserve Best New Artist or not (obviously you think not!), I’ll just be glad to benefit off their increased profile regardless

it’s very true that Mumford & Sons have a similar sound to the Avett Bros (love them too), but by that same argument you could say all of the nominees are just a wannabe someone else. I make no claims as to Mumford’s originality, but they are very good at their derivative thing then, cause I can’t think of an album I’ve listened to more this year #personaltasteetcetc

        • I’d say its pretty unfair to call Mumford and Sons wanna-be Avett Brothers. Unfair to Noah and the Whale that is…
But Seriously, even though I don’t find them particularly original I really love Mumford and Sons!
Personally I think Drake deserves to win and I know Bieber will win.

  7. Come on guys, they can win. Believe in something.

  8. They’re actually up for Best Alternative Album against Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses, the Black Keys, and Broken Bells. I could see them winning that one possibly, although if I’d guess, I’d say either Black Keys or VW.

  9. The Grammy’s remain to be a joke. Personally this was my least favorite Arcade Fire and it has no shot of winning the Album of the Year category. I just hope it doesn’t go to Katy Perry, even though I can’t stand any of the other nominees either (exception to OLD Eminem).

  10. First rant…..Where the fuck is Janelle Monae!!!!!!
also while i absolutely love The Black Keys, how the fuck are they alternative!!!
It’s like anything that isn’t shitty pop is alternative!
Generic list of snubs that all charted in the billboard top 10
    The National
    LCD Sounsystem
    Joanna Newsom

  11. At first I was actually pleased at how current the nominees were. Then I realized that they consider those to be the 5 best albums of the year. Even by mainstream media standards, Teenage Dream got shitty reviews. And having never heard of Lady Antebellum, I had to wikipedia them. Country band whose album got a 2 star review from Rolling Stone and went 3X platinum. They will win.

  12. No Jethro Tull?

  13. Good to see Korn finally get a nod.

  14. Are you sure there isn’t a typo? I think “Katy Perry – Teenage Dream” is supposed to read “Beach House – Teen Dream”

    • Dude, like the grammys would know who Beach House is. I’m pretty sure they’re too busy sucking at life.

  15. I fucking wish it was a typo. But it’s not. Teen Dream should be all up inside the Grammys but the Grammys are terrible.
Also, to somebody above who was outraged at no Janelle Monae, thankfully she is nominated twice, once for her album and once for “Tightrope”.

  17. Whatever. Music is too subjective for award shows any how. I’m not sure how one calls Eminmen’s album better than Arcade Fire’s album.. aren’t those just a little too different for comparison?

I am happy to see them get the nod, it’s probably my favorite of the year. Gotta support your indie’s in the mainstream.

  18. Another shitty award show doesnt change the fact that i’ve listened to a ton of good music this year. I would be embarrassed to be in the same category with any of those other douches though. The funny thing is that the suburbs pretty much mocks 3/4 of the other artists.

  19. Can stereogum bring back the highest rated comment of the month or something? That was fun now I feel under motivated to up vote great puns and insightful commentary.

  20. The only award I half-care about is The Gummys… *wink wink*

  21. I remember Stereogum did the highest/lowest rated comments of the year. I thought I would be a shoe-in for the lowest rated comment this year but then upvoting and downvoting was restricted to registered members only. Now I have to work at it in every story that catches my fancy.

  22. The Grammys what? I’m not really that interested in watching any award show that involves Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber. Just my opinion on this.

  23. Well, folks, this marks the point where so called ‘indie’ music becomes mainstream. Wait, can’t something be both indie and mainstream? Those two terms aren’t contradicting are they? Independent and popular?

    • I dunno man, I saw a kid at the opticians today getting some horn-rimmed glasses, and later on an old lady with a moustache. It seems nothing is sacred anymore.
