Still weeks off from getting the full Under The Blacklight platter from Rilo, but there’s a “Silver Lining” to ease the anticipation. Considerably less porno-funky than “The Moneymaker” — in fact it’s a slice of sugary ’60s soul by comparison — the hook’s got Jenny in love and cheering like a metaphorical metallurgist: “Hooray hooray … I’m your silver lining/Hooray hooray … but now I’m gold.” Cue the old school synths, the drums-and-vocal breakdown, the triangle?! Yep it’s a throwback sugar-pop confection, recasting Jenny as the girl you’re dying to bring home to mama.
Rilo Kiley – “Silver Lining”
Under The Blacklight is out 8/21 on Warner. Below, the Rilo cover.

i really like this song.
very rabbit fur coat.
I dont necessarily love it, BUT I second the notice that Jenny can do no wrong. I love Jenny!!
I think it’s fine that Blake wanted to Robert Palmer it up for Moneymaker, but there’s not really any denying that these two songs are atrocious. The fact that the best anyone is saying on their behalf is “they may grow on you” bodes oh-so hideously unwell. This new one is just bad Rabbit Fur Coat with a cool guitar lick.
And I have to agree with whoever said that the recent string of letdown follow-ups most definitely continued with Bjork’s piece of shit latest.
All that said, RK already gave us the official requisite amount of brilliant songs to be worthy of being let off without much disappointment. Nothing lasts forever.
“And I have to agree with whoever said that the recent string of letdown follow-ups most definitely continued with Bjork’s piece of shit latest.”
Her latest c.d continued with her GOODNESS. Its Bright Eyes who REALLY shitted it up with Casadega, GOD was that album boring as hell.
This song by RK is getting me hopeful, because now I’m quite enjoying it. But I need more scarcastic honesty.
This song is just blah
but at least they are trying somethin new with The Moneymaker
Saying nothing about this “direction” of the band, on the most basic and fundamental level, The Moneymaker is a very, very bad/uninteresting song. I don’t care if RK turns into a Dirty South Crunk band, but if they release a song like the Moneymaker, I’m going to say it sucks. It doesn’t matter the style. I like all styles. I like good music. I don’t like bad music. That is bad music.
Silver lining is better, but still really hokey. It’s ok, not that great though. I hope the rest of the album is better, but it isn’t looking that way. Some of you diehard people need to take off your blinders and accept the two songs for what they are.
Rilo Kiley may be one of many bands who put out a lot of good records and then boom, they fall flat. I’ve heard a few songs and again, I am totally unimpressed. This is a band with real talent and it seems like they are just pissing it away. Anything that sounds so overproduced makes me think they got poor direction, are bored with writing music, or maybe they want to go off and do other projects.
The whole point of a blog is for all of us to speak up and say what we think. Clearly we are big fans of RK and music in general or we would not be here.
Wow. This is truly mediocre. How disappointing. I think the worst part is the production on this song–Jenny sounds like Jewel on it. I do love this band, but if this is a sample of the sound of the next album, I’ll probably skip it. I like the rawness of their other records, and this is kind of the opposite of that. (I will still see them live though.)
Everybody who is bashing this new Rilo Kiley, obviously liked/like Rilo Kiley for the wrong reasons. Simple as that.
I find this song and dreamworld amazing. Moneymaker isn’t too good. But the other 2 definitely remind me of the Rilo Kiley I’ve come to know and love.
The Score:
- Don’t hate Rilo Kiley for trying something different.
- It’s not that it’s different – the new stuff just sucks.
And it does. How can you like Rilo’s back catalog and simultaneously enjoy this? That’s good music versus bad music. Rethink your taste.
what is wrong with everyone. everything so far has been great! Maybe it’s been so long since they released anything that you’ve forgotten who they are or something. I don’t even see how Moneymaker isn’t their ‘sound’. The first thing I thought of was how ‘them’ it was, and then about how great it would be to be in a porn with jenny lewis. Silverlining is perfect, dreamworld reminds me of when Blake used to sing, and that is exciting! Get happy, hipsters.
Although, I can see why some wouldn’t enjoy listening to this, why must you all sound so bitter and pissed at Jenny and Blake. Honestly, If they are making music you don’t like, don’t buy their albums. But don’t knock someone’s art, just because it doesn’t meet YOUR standards. I personally enjoy Jenny Lewis’s solo stuff and Blakes, and like to see them working together as well. I will buy this album, and the next, if not just to support two artists I believe truly deserve the utmost respect.
I love the power glove. It’s so bad.
I think it is pretty shitty that people can call themselves a fan of a certian band and trash them in the same breath. People are pissed bc Rilo Kiley moved to a major record lable like WB. So what. That doesnt influence the words or style of the music. Jenny and Blake are going to sing/play what they feel reguardless of side projects or a new record lable. And most of you people have only heard two songs from “Under the Black Light”. Give them a chance. People need to accept change and stop trashing a band that they supposedly love. And on the song. I think it’s beautifull, Jenny could sing a song about a piece of shit lieing on the side walk and make it beautiful. Can’t wait to hear more!
“People are pissed bc Rilo Kiley moved to a major record lable like WB. So what. That doesnt influence the words or style of the music.”
aside from a couple of posters, so far most of the comments don’t even mention the major label shift. most of the fans should already be familiar with the fact that RK are no longer on an indie label, since they made the jump during More Adventurous. if anyone was mad at them for that, they’re probably aren’t really fans to begin with. but judging from the comments, much of the issue seems to be how it’s changed rather than the fact that they’ve changed. not all change is for the better.
if you like the new sound, good for you. but just cause you’re an RK fan doesn’t mean you have to like and agree with everything they do. you can still love them and dislike a bunch of songs. that’s what makes them a band and not…um a cult? but i guess the numerous comments and my own multiple ones show how strongly the fans feel for RK, even if we don’t always agree.
Ewwww, I’m a whiny hipster with a shitty suit coat and dumb pants. I can’t possibly like the new Rilo Kiley song because it’ll mean I might not be scene anymore. Ooooh, they don’t make songs that sound exactly like their old stuff. Ewww, they’re on a major. Go fuck off to some Animal Collective, who don’t you?
Oh please. The Sarah Mclachlan comparisons are totally apt. It has nothing to do with being a hipster. I’d be ecstatic if my Mom listened to this song instead of Christian music, but it ISN’T interesting or genius. It’s the kind of song you accept if you’ve had kids and you want your favorite musical acts to mellow out with you. It’s a totally solid disposable soul-pop song, it’s just by a band who’s done way better. I’d dance to this at my wedding since it would make the older attendees feel comfy. That’s just about the best review it could ever get.
I’ll listen to this track while I’m driving through New Mexico
Rilo Kiley is O-V-E-R.
This is song is much better than the moneymaker, when I first heard that I was so dissapointed, I really wanted to like it as Im a big fan of jenny. I have listened to moneymaker about ten times now, still dont get it.
This song is ok but not a reason to buy the album.
Yours dissapointingly
standing by a band, regardless of how awful their music is seems like the most stubborn, stifling thing i can imagine. these songs are bad. sorry.
i’m not saying i wouldn’t hit that…
but the songs are awful.
The thing I like about RK is their unpredictability. It’s so damned refreshing. They toy with success but stay close to who they really are. Back off, you closed minded jerks.
Holy Jesus you people are unbelievable.
Memo to internet people–the world has changed. There’s so much music out there that no one can keep up with all the perfectly talented bands out there, yet you people have time to bash the stuff you don’t like post after post, thread after thread? Do yourself and the rest of us a favor, tell us when you find something you like, or shut up. When the post has two comments after three weeks we’ll get the picture that people didn’t like it.
I still don’t see how this is different at all! Have you party poopers even HEARD more adventurous?! ‘I Never’ Is a track you might want to look into if you think this is soooo weird for Jenny and out of place. And if you want to go the ‘this band hasn’t been awesome since Take Offs and Landings’ route, then you’re just retarded. Blake even sings on this album. Rejoice! I can’t wait for it. I can’t believe all the negative bullshit. Ppl being disappointed with Moneymaker is unfathomable. I’d take that over Portions anyday. Jesus.
people commenting are one of these groups:
1. love everything rilo kiley puts out – even poop on a drum – and think that you’re not a fan unless you do too.
2. only like stuff that sounds like their first CD and the stuff when they were “indie.”
3. think these people commenting are retarded.
fans are allowed to have opinions. and artists have the right to express themselves however they like. and there are times when people won’t like that expression.
i think it’s fine – and one thing – to just not like a song or a sound.
and it’s a totally different thing to think that they’ve sold out.
i wouldn’t go far enough to say that these new songs are horrible – and not even that different.
“silver lining” is great – in my opinion.
“moneymaker” is not so great – in my opinion.
wtf. is up with people? this is RILO KILEY. I would love to see any of you folks come up with songs half as good as they do. I Love the new stuff and i cant wait for this album to come out.
It’s a decent enough song, but I think they’ve gotten lazy with the song writing. Moneymaker and this are both pretty repetetive. It’s a lot different, but everyone would be just as pissed if Jenny was still doing the Frug on every track.
Hopefully the album will measure up – they always manage to pull off a few gems.
Everyone needs to realize that bands are allowed to grow as people. I think the record is fantastic. They’re not together to make all of you happy, they’re together to produce music…. music THEY love. Take it or leave it. I’m going to embrace it.
i love it.
im trying to view this whole record as satire- jenny and co. making fun of everything they hear. (well at least i hope its true!)
I have no problem with this or Moneymaker. Give the whole album a chance once it comes out. Geez. There’s nothing wrong with a good pop song. Even Elliott Smith understood that well.
i know jenny knows wat shes doing cant wait for this album. Moneymaker is different but i love it. and this song has her old voice back so im happy that the album will still have the beautiful jenny voice that made me fall in love a while ago.
It’s a big pile of poo! Go check out Clap your Hands and say Yeah’s new cd it’s a masterpiece!!
I like the old stuff and the new stuff. Every band evolves. I’m excited for the new cd!
There are about fifteen Rilo Kiley songs that I don’t love, and eleven of them are on this album.
There’s nothing wrong with pop. I love pop.
There’s something wrong with this.
sounds like jenny lewis and the watson twins music.
still very good though
I love it so much. I think that you “h8rz” should really give it a chance. This is obviously the direction that Rilo Kiley was already traveling during “More Adventurous,” so don’t sound so shocked. If they stayed the same as they were back in the day with “The Frug” or even “Take Offs and Landings” you would all probably be complaining that they suck for having everything sound the same. Get with it. This is what you call progressive. It is beautiful, and if you can’t keep up well then you will probably lose touch . . . in the bad way. I see that many people are also trying to deny this single of its country elements . . . are you deaf? It clearly shows fusion which I think is exciting. I love Rilo Kiley, I adore The Elected, and I absolutely positively loved Rabbit Fur Coat and everything that included the Watson Twins.
Oh, and also, I don’t feel like this is as poppy as everyone is making it out to be. Maybe that’s just me . . .
-I’ll keep my arms outstreatched for Rilo Kiley-
Milo Beloved.
I think the mistake was letting Tucker Carlson be photographed with the band for the cover photo.
i like the new rilo kiley
I love Rilo Kiley.
They’re my favorite band BY FAR.
And Jenny is most definitely my role model.
But I listened to some clips of the new album and I tried so hard to like it.
But it all sounds so different from their old stuff.
I LOVED their old stuff and I hope they go back to that style.
I bought two tickets to Seattle,
And regardless, I’m still going to buy Under The Blacklight.
Even if I never listen to it.
I think it’s just hard for them working with their side projects, and getting back together to make this album.
Maybe it was too rushed?
dude you guys need to chill out, this song is amazing.
JESUS CHRIST!!!
Yeah, I really like this song. I even like the moneymaker song, i’ve never been a big fan of Rilo K, but this record just might make me a fan.
I actually downloaded the album.
It’s good, but it’s far from their best.
It’s just a little all over the place.
One song sounds like a Fleetwood Mac, the next borders on attempting hardcore rock, and then they break into a half-Spanish-”we were listening to old Gloria Estefan when we wrote this” song.
Yeah… Just a little all over the place.
If this was their best album, that simply means that most of you would turn to talk shit on their previous work, saying something like “it’s about time they made something decent”. This song really isn’t awful at all. I enjoy the hell out of it. If it missing anything, it’s the blue collared intimacy that some of RK’s more folk-esque work has brilliantly delivered. So, true, it doesn’t sound like Jenny’s usual lonely bar blues, but it’s a sexier sound that we haven’t heard from her. We’re talking about a singer that makes us all smile with half our mouths when she says “fuck” in a song. If your only response to this track, which as we all know is only a small piece of the album, then you’re disappointed in an band for being able to grow. If you listen to all of RK’s albums in chronological order, you can undoubtedly see a maturity developing, and a slow (yet steady) decent from the playful interludes of ‘Take Offs and Landings’. If you’re looking for the lil’ indie kid of Rilo Kiley past, they’ve grown up. I enjoy the new sound. Just not as much as I enjoyed watching them find it. But I applaud their ability to grow.
WOW this post is fully of whinny Indie snobs. The two songs I have heard so far are good. Over polished? Does not sound like their previous songs? Why should they make shitty, low quality sounding albums when they can get the money for good recordings? Why should they write the SAME songs over and over?
You know, I’m really torn on this whole album. I mean, The Moneymaker has like eight words, and yet it reveals a [dare I even say this?] sulrty-er side of Jenny. I personally like Silver lining. I actually really admiire someone who’d write a song that gets stuck in your head, and you hate it. But seriously. I also admire that RK sounds a lot more…cool to me. This album is far from perfect. Very far. Then again no one is. And with the ‘I wish that Rilo Kiley would go back to old awesome selves they were. They just suck now.’ people, c’mon! It’s part of being an artist to change up things. In short, I just like it. Freaking sue me. I don’t care.
This song is, in my opinion, quite good. Granted, I am not a “long-time RK fan” or anything remotely close to that. It just shows that this band is good at whatever it attempts to do – I know that have an indie background, but doesn’t this show that they can step outside the box once in a while???
Either way, Rilo Kiley will never be played on Top 40 stations…not even with this song being quite poppy. They have too much of an independent pedigree to be played alongside Avril and Nickelback. So quit whining already!
elitist and clueless if you think this new single is anything other than a retro-pop indie gem.. success really pisses you people off doesn’t it.. it is heads and shoulders above anything being released by the world.. it is in your notion that anything commercial is a sellout that your nonsensical criticism falls flat. this is the best and most accessible this band has ever sounded. grow up, eventually you will understand that success is not selling out and maybe you’ll be a little less bitter about your inevitable failures.
silver lining is beautiful
i love this song.
a lot.
No one here’s gonna change anyone else’s opinion–which, by the way, is what everyone’s posting, and they’re well entitled to do so–so please shut up.
Personally, I think (notice, think is a personal statement–I’m not attacking anyone else’s opinions) that Silver Lining is one of the catchiest songs ever. The lyrics are less cynical than older Rilo songs, which is sad. I miss the cynicism too. Moneymaker’s not a good song, in my opinion.
It’s me again. Just wanted to say how Alex was right. Also, EHL-OH-EHL to wtffffffff’s comment about being in a porn with Jenny Lewis.
I am gald I’m not the only person tha herd “My Sweet Lord” in this song
although this album is overly produced…
it still sounds amazing live.
I think everyone of you guys talking shit needs to shut up!
Rilo kiley is the shit, they make damn good music and all of you can eff off!
Ok kiddies. Just heard Silver Lining on the only radio station in Chicago that would even play something like that. Quite simply, it’s just more great Rilo Kiley. Get rid of your Indie agenda and just appreciate the music.
