Das Racist by Kyle Johnson

Das Racist posted an apology to their London fans for a show they missed last night at Cargo. According to the blog post, they made it to the UK, but weren’t allowed to leave the airport. Instead they were detained for over eight hours then sent back to Switzerland. The room where they were kept sounds as bad as you would expect:

We were held in a room with books, prayer rug and compass, television and remote, and these horrible sandwiches (cheese and onion, egg and cress, etc.). Also, “digestive biscuits’ along with Walker’s crisps (Salt & Vinegar, Salt).

We were there with two Iranian men, a Brazilian woman who spoke only Arabic and an Indian man with a student visa who couldn’t speak a lick of English. Our people!

They’ve got images of their deportation papers on their website, but there’s no written reason for the whole ordeal. The guys claim it’s for their political views, but it could be for releasing thousands of classified diplomatic cables, for being brown and bearded in an airport, or as they mention in the post “…sticklerism on the part of UK Customs regarding paperwork.”

  1. Das so Racist.

  2. This really is a conundrum. I mean, aside from the fucked up UK-border-policy issues this ordeal exposes, which are substantial, I also reflexively “Like” everything we post about Das Racist on Facebook. But I don’t “like” the idea of an “Amrit Likes Das Racist Detained And Deported In The UK” appearing on my profile. What’s worse? The ease with which words like “facebook” and “like” have slipped into my thought (let alone speech) patterns.

Point is: This post is at least three kinds of depressing. Wake me up when it’s not -5º outside and my prayer rug delivery gets here, please.

  3. The UK is one of the most backwards places in the world.
