When we saw Beirut’s shows at MHOW and BAM, I mentioned Zach’s lilting new/old ukulele love song “East Harlem” (written when he was 17, unveiled in February) had him embracing his inner Stephin Merritt. We posted a shitty clip once, now there’s high-quality video of that song along with the entire MHOW set at baeblemusic.com. The shows focused on Condon’s new EPs, and while I loved the Realpeople synth-and-laptop pop half, the full-band arrangements of “My Night Of Th Prostitute…” and “The Concubine” are themselves worth the watch. (Also, you can finally see Beirut’s cover of Ayo Barroso’s “Brazil,” aka the song you probably know because of Arcade Fire.)

  1. If you associate “Brazil” with the Arcade Fire before you associate it with Sinatra, you need to listen to more music that’s over 10 years old and isn’t MBV

      Fuck Sinatra.

Ugh, this cover of Brazil by Arcade Fire is so horrible. I’m glad I don’t associate that song with them… instead how about the movie Brazil that uses the song as it’s theme…. or Cornelius’ incredibly superior cover of the song?!

I feel sorry for anyone whose first exposure to the song was that Arcade Fire cover.

  2. Brazil isn’t a Sinatra standard, much less one of his best or best known. I’m more shocked that anyone would associate it with Arcade Fire rather than Terry Gilliam’s wonderful film and its wonderful soundtrack.

  3. i thought i was the only one who actually like the realpeople half of the album, “Prostitute” may have been the best song on that album

  4. Ahhh thank you Amrit, I crave anything Condon. East Harlem is so gorgeous. For some reason those horns sounded particularly NMH, I mean more than usual. I would kill for an mp3 of that. I feel like I’m always whining about mp3s, sorry!

  5. Beirut’s “Take Away” show is pretty great too…

Oh God, how can I obssess more than I do already with Zach Condon?
    By listening something THAT beautiful.

  7. East Harlem is my new workday soundtrack…because i just keep listening to it at my desk

  8. I could listen My Night With The Prostitute…and The Concubine all day long. I also really like My Wife, Lost in the World.

Love it! It has this whole Phil Spector vibe to it. I wish I had this on MP3

  10. I posted this tune on my blog oneforthegooddays.com off a bootleg I taped of the show where Beirut played with the Vassar orchestra… here’s a link to an MP3 of it. Came out pretty nicely.

Dunno how long it’s going to stay up though!

Great set, but only 37 minutes long?
