Weedeater - Jason... The Dragon

The ominous gnashing-of-teeth opening narration, tongue-in-bongwater track “Palms Of Opium,” and watery banjo/bass/cricket closer “Whiskey Creek” add a strong Southern flare to Weedeater’s fourth album Jason… The Dragon. These more overt nods to the longstanding NC trio’s local landscape is a beautiful move, introducing a restful dynamic to the usual crusty, sludgy, in-the-red Dixieland racket. The post-Buzzov*en stoners returned to Steve Albini’s Chicago lair to record/mix the collection, so outside those less-distorted excursions, the bass and guitar tones are especially thick. As you’ve come to expect from 2001′s …And Justice for Y’all through 2007′s God Luck And Good Speed, the doom tempos lurch in forbidding but catchy ways. Maybe none more than one of the collection’s bigger, slightly cleaner anthems, “Homecoming.”

Jason… The Dragon is out 3/15 via Southern Lord. Catch them on the road, sometimes with Zoroaster, sometimes with Kvelertak, and sometimes with Red Fang (whose new album Murder The Mountain has been on steady rotation over here). They’re also doing SXSW, playing shows with Zoroaster, the Body, Liturgy, Trash Talk, the Atlas Moth, Howl, Red Fang, Kylesa, Crowbar, St. Vitus, Helmet, etc. Here:

  1. I hardly ever get a smooth stream on this site. It always breaks up on me every 5-10 seconds. Is this intentional, or is it on my end? I rarely ever have the same problem on other sites.

  2. Maybe you have time to entertain this: I notice that your metal posts are always moving forward , and that the only real time you get to sit still is your year-end list. I am wondering what are some of your all-time favorite albums, metal or otherwise? What are a few records that came out, say, prior to 2006 that you really think are essential?

    • Hey Peter. Will do. My head is clogged with the present right now, but when I have some time, I’ll come up with a list like this. Currently, I’ve be listening to a ton of Jesus Lizard. I always loved Liar best, though I realize people usually cite Goat (great as well). I also listen to Laughing Hyenas’ Crawl EP at least once a week. Maybe that’s a start? (Heavy in a different way: Tons of Codeine these past few weeks. Pair those albums with Winter’s Into Darkness and Eternal Frost…)

  3. I picked this record up today and it’s great start to finish. As much as I love long, drawn out songs that have to build, sometimes I just want a band to streamline what they do and put out a 35-40 minute record. The fuzziness of the guitar and bass are exquisite.
