32 Bands To See At SXSW 2011

Come March every year, the same questions are asked, retreaded thought pieces get pitched: What does it mean to have a music industry festival in the decrepit climate of 2011? Does anyone actually get discovered at SXSW? What’s the point of signing to a label? What happened to that taco truck on Red River near Emo’s? In this space we dutifully sidestep those questions (though anyone with intel on the taco truck thing should get at us) in favor of some simple facts: a) This is a week full of brands and bands, and b) navigating it becomes a lot more fun with a narrowed list of artists worth pursuing.

This SXSW we’ve pared the hyped and unhyped masses down to a sleek 32 acts. It’s a list that includes bands we’re excited to check out live perhaps for the first time; suggestions for bands we have checked out live and left a good impression at the last industry fest; and the requisite inclusion of those artists that everyone will be talking about all week so you may as well know where they’re playing so you can be in on (or make sure to avoid) the lines and discussions surrounding them.

Presenting: the SXSW schedules for 32 acts worth your time, with audio of each for you to see if you’re into ’em. Click the headers for more posts if you like what you hear. Let us know if you wind up liking what you see. (We will, all week.) Also don’t forget our parties, which will have lots of worthy artists. One’s on Thursday @ Beerland; the other’s the last party standing at 11:59PM Saturday at the PureVolumeHouse until 4AM with an open bar the whole time YIKES. Here’s to making your life easier/more drunken.

  4. Why do most band names stink so much nowadays? Das Racist is good. Gold Panda and Computer Magic are ok. The rest are so lame. C’mon kids. Try harder.

  5. Megaphonic Thrift, Zoobombs, The Non, Rich Aucoin, Las Robertas, Yuck, Royal Bangs,

    • Hell yes, you folks in going to SXSW should go see Rich Aucoin. I’ve played with him several times here in Canada and it is always a guaranteed good time.
