Death Cab For Cutie - Codes & Keys

Last night, Death Cab pulled off their highly choreographed, live music video broadcast. The song was “You Are A Tourist,” a genial guitar jam that brought little support to the band’s words about the forthcoming Codes & Keys relying less on guitar, taking direction more from albums like Eno’s Another Green World. Nick Harmer says the album is not guitar based in parts but also guitar based in parts. Anything is possible. So, if you’ve been waiting for a listen to a DCFC a little less ordinary, try the moody “Home Is A Fire”: not entirely without guitar, no, but no conventional Death Cab guitar-rock production, either.

  1. Ok, I didn’t expect to be excited for this album but, I’m pretty damn excited now.

    • Couldn’t agree more! I am practically in disbelief about how much I’m anticipating this album. I thought I’d sworn off expecting much out of Death Cab after “The Open Door” EP, but they’ve changed my mind.

What I like most about this recent output is that Death Cab seems not only revitalized, but full of fresh ideas. They’re not repeating the “return to your roots” rock’n'roll trope that is almost always an act of desperation that falls flat.

      • The Open Door EP was definitely more true to classic Death Cab than this garbage. I sure hope the rest of the album is lightyears different than ‘Home is a fire’ and ‘Some boys.’

Both of those songs are lazy and completely uninspired compared to what this band is capable of.

‘You are a tourist’ is okay in terms of the music, however come on Ben, you are so much more of a lyricist than “Whens there’s a BURNING in your heart, an endless YEARNING in your heart” -or- “When there’s a burning in your HEART and you think you’ll burst APART”

        • I think the lyrics to “You Are A Tourist” are pretty great. And come on, Jake Kaminski. They can’t go back to “classic Death Cab,” nor should they try, because that part of their career is over. They’re in a very different place now. Ben isn’t suffering intense heartbreak, working a depressing job as a scientist and moving cross-country. He’s happily married with America’s sweetheart, Zooey, and he’s settled down in LA. (Who’d have known, especially after “Why You’d Want To Live Here”?)

In summation: I think your comment sucks. But hopefully you can be happy listening to old Death Cab, while I’ll be happy listening to both old Death Cab and their new album, in which they explore new directions.

  2. Knew it, this record’s going to be really good.

  3. I’m much more excited for this album than I thought I would be… I had been anticipating the kind of frat-boy love song junk we’ve been getting from them since Transatlanticism. Then I had the great fortune of reading the Under the Radar article on Codes and Keys and now… Now I will probably be purchasing this. Very likely.

  4. After hearing this single I immediately pre-ordered the album on vinyl. I know it won’t get here for a while but I really just can’t wait any longer.
I like that both of the singles differ from one another and still manage to make me feel like the boys of DCFC are still drinking champagne from paper cups.

  5. Awww….seriously weak. The more polished DCFC gets, the lamer they become. Songwriting and lyrics just uninspired. I hate those high vocals at 1:05 ugh. No balls.

  6. Uh oh.. I just listened to You Are A Tourist. I’m less excited now and more worried! Oh no :/

  7. cool track, gets me more than you are a tourist. but i cant make any decision yet, you know?
i need the full album for context.

  8. I am not sure about Codes And Keys yet.

  9. I honestly love it. This track really breathes. Yeah it’s a bit electro, but that’s that. Yeah, it relies heavily on production, but it’s not slick.. I think the production is really smart and musical. This song has a great hook, a strong melody, and some really interesting chord movements.

    • I’m with you on the “breathing”. this really isn’t so far off from what they’ve done in the past…different enough to be refreshing and close enough to be familiar. they’ve used sequnced electronic beats in the past and even if they didn’t, I say bring it on.
you gotta respect them for not sitting on their haunches and doing another Narrow Stairs.
