The “Dirty Projectors Designation”: Or, most raved about show we didn’t see (named lovingly after the apparently classic DP gig at Merc that we heard all about from the sidewalk). CMJ’s DP Designees are the Maccabees, who apparently slayed at Gothamist House, and then again at Pianos while we were resting our legs before an SNL-infused set from Shudderer Craig Wedren. The Brighton-based outfit generally trade in a cheerier strain of Brit-pop/indie stylings than they do here, on the b-side to the just released “Toothpaste Kisses” single. Distressed, disturbed, and really paranoid, the Maccabees’ early AM jam sees ‘em lose their shit in a confessional fit of insomnia on “Sleep,” needles throbbing deeply into the red in the climactic, concluding twenty seconds. Short attention spanners, worry not; it only takes a minute to get there.

The Maccabees’ Colour It In is out via Polydor (“Golden Skans”-autostart-upon-click warning; not necessarily a bad thing). Hear more at MySpace. And for bonus, check the video for “Toothpaste Kisses”:
