Last night Doves picked up where they left off in 2005, opening their US tour in the city that closed it last time through. Photographer Andrew Youssef was there, and he tells us that “Pounding” was restarted due to Jez missing his guitar part, but otherwise Doves were flawless. The set ended playfully, with “There Goes The Fear” melting into a percussive jam during which the band handed out tambourines and drumsticks to the crowd. Opening the show were Pop Noir, a pair of Orange County twins who have a thick Manchester influence. As Andrew notes, they were probably pretty psyched to open for Doves. Check the photo spread, and here’s Doves’ setlist and tour dates:

They were really good last night. I was completely and happily blown away! Jimi is funny and charismatic and I think I heard him make a crack about teabaggers… even humored the freebird people with a verse. The crowd was calling for cedar room, but firesuite was good by me. Hearing them live for the first time was a euphoric experience

  6. I’m really, really, really hoping they play The Cedar Room and The Man Who Told Everything at the Wiltern tomorrow. That would make my month…

The Wiltern show was my third Doves gig and it was by far the best one. Incredible sound, nice lights and video and a band that just knows how to do it live. Jimi seemed a little surprised at what a great reception they were getting, but he shouldn’t be, they’re simply a fantastic live band, a band whose music fills up a place like the Wiltern with ease. Should have gone to Anaheim :-(

  9. the coolest part of a doves show is that they have 6 macbook pros on stage at all times. It’s not actually the coolest part but its funny.
