Can’t wait. In Rainbows was slightly underwhelming, but still great. I just hope the next one is a little more energetic, I found the last one got bogged down near the end by the constant stream of mid-tempo jams. They were still good, but nothing really stuck out like on previous albums.

I don’t know why he’s retarded for wishing In Rainbows was a bit more rocking or uptempo. It’s just an opinion. Nothing really stood out for him. Ok, fine. He’s hoping the new album is a bit more energetic. What’s wrong with that? Why does everything even mildly negative said about radiohead result in such furor? They’re a great band, but they aren’t perfect. And if someone really liked the Bends or OK Computer there’s nothing wrong with them hoping they go back to a more rock oriented direction. I doubt they will, and that guy might be disappointed but it seems like the he was being perfectly reasonable. Should he have just put Radiohead > Everything?

Wow, I can’t believe the comment by OOS got so many negative scores and even someone calling him a “fucking retarded”. It’s a valid respectful opinion and some people may agree with it or not. People can be so stupid sometimes.
I feel the same way about OK Computer: Airbag, Subterranean Homesick Alien, Exit Music, Let Down, Karma Police, Fitter Happier, Climbing Up the Walls, No Surprises, Lucky, and The Tourist. I mean, come on, so many mid-tempo jams! They should’ve named the album Snooze Computer. Or maybe Snooze Button.
I thought IR was their best since OKC, so I’m excited to hear some new material.
It would be cool if they released a couple of EPs of new songs leading up to the album.
Or even a live album.
They do have a live album. It’s called I Might Be Wrong. Maybe I’m being hopeful but I expect LP8 by the end of 2010 and a tour for 2011.
It’s actually coming out last Monday. That’s how unexpected Radiohead is.

I think In Rainbows is actually one of their top three best albums. The only tracks on the album I could leave or take are Videotape and Faust Arp. I think every other song on the album is nothing short of GREAT. Can’t wait till they come back to America to tour, as they are the best live band of all time.
Or even a live DVD! But there are some good quality ones floating around on youtube. This release can’t come soon enough, right when you think you’ve finally exhausted all the b-sides, they fire off a new album! Great!

Hopefully this one is more energetic than IN RAINBOWS. I found that one got bogged down by a bunch of Mid-TEMPO tracks toward the end. No real stand-out songs.

Radiohead were soundchecking new songs throughout the IR 2008 tour. Based on that alone, i’m guessing we’ll see a new album in about a year. Hell yeah!!

I agree with the first poster. I’m old enough to have been a Radiohead fan all the way through, since Pablo Honey, and I think that In Rainbows is the second worst album that Radiohead ever made. Now, it must be said…Radiohead’s “second worst” is better than most bands’ “best,” but it’s still inferior to their output from 1995-2003.
I have a theory about the popularity of In Rainbows (get ready to click the “negative comment score” button). I think that for a lot of younger fans, IR was the first Radiohead record that was actually released when they were of an age at which they were really informed about popular music. They knew that Radiohead were living legends, and they wanted an opportunity to experience that as a present phenomenon, the way their older brothers experienced it. So, IR comes out, kids between 15-22 go bananas. Oldos like me were happy to have a new record.
But I feel pretty strongly that Amnesiac was the high water mark.
i’m with you for the most part. i’ve been on board since ok computer and i think it’s weird that they’re hitting some sort of second wind in popularity now.
i don’t think it’s because in rainbows is especially better than their previous work. i think it’s just an influx of young fans being into the current popularity of experimental and indie sorts of music. this is their first release since that influx and it shows.
personally i like hail to the thief better than in rainbows and i don’t remember this level of hype coverage around that album.
I, too, assumed for a while that In Rainbows’ massive popularity was due to it being a lot of people’s first Radiohead album. That was the only way I could explain the hysteria for such a mediocre collection of b-sides. But it also received fantastic reviews from critics across the board and form longtime fans. That I attribute to marketing and to the “fanboy” nature of Radiohead listeners.
Anyways, back on topic, In Rainbows WAS extremely disappointing to those of us who listened to it with an objective viewpoint and I’m looking forward to hearing whether IR will be looked back on as the beginning of Radiohead’s slow descent into irrelevance or just a hitch in their brilliant careers.

Oh please! lol I’m 38 years old and I probably own music by more bands than the total number of days you’ve been alive. I’ve also been to well over 2000 live music events of one kind or another. Do not assume or presume that your “objective viewpoint” is the same as any other single persons on earth, or that any one of those people would find yours better or more important than theirs. We all love Radiohead. We all heard In Rainbows. Some people love it and some people don’t. Pretty much everybody will have a place where they rank it in the Radiohead catalogue. But NOBODY is right or wrong. Opinions are subjective. All that matters is that everybody listened to Radiohead. This is something we have in common, so lets celebrate it – rather than constantly pointing out our differences and trying to be superior to the next person. Radiohead is better than most bands on earth – and we all know this. : ) Some funny comments in here, though. Especially last Monday’s unexpected album release.
I think a lot has to do with the HUGE growth of the internet as a source for music, a la myspace and last.fm.

that, and it rocks. personally, its my second favorite behind kid a but a lot of my love for both of those albums is connotative.
I’ve been a Radiohead fan since the start and I loved In Rainbows. A lot of critics did too. I don’t think your theory holds up with my experience.
If anything, I think it makes more sense to argue that the older fans are gonna treat the older albums as infallible and underrate the new stuff.
Its much better than Pablo Honey and Hail to the Thief without a doubt.
I would also argue its more even than Amnesiac and therefore a better album overall. I mean, Amnesiac has some of the best work they have done, but it has a couple turds and some filler too.
easy there chief, i’m a mere 24 years young (just outside your 18-22 range), and i feel as though i can say that i’ve actively listened to radiohead since their early years. i definitely rocked pablo honey a cd in the 3rd grade and had the bends in middle school. i’ll bet a lot of people are in the same boat. i loved in rainbows but i don’t think i should be characterized as a hyperactive young-buck radiohead fan who’s undeservingly getting a boner over the the band. ageist!!

Adam I agree with your theory based on my experiences. I am 21 years old and my first Radiohead album was Hail to the Thief, which I received as a gift in 2004. IR was a big deal for me as a 19 year old in college especially after seeing them on their 2006 summer tour. But oddly enough, after listening to all of their albums Hail to the Thief is my favorite because it was the first Radiohead album that I ever heard. Of course my peers all scoff me and say OKC is their best and that Kid A is their favorite.

I have been a fan since OKC, although I owned Pablo Honey when I was in grade school. I liked it okay, but it wasn’t until OKC that I realized they were more than a just band with some pretty cool songs. I think OKC was also released when i actually understood music a little more, and could appreciate what was going on. I still think Pablo Honey and The Bends are good rock albums, but they do not come close to other Radiohead releases.
Anyway, the whole IR thing has confused me as well, and I think a few of you commenters might have hit the nail on the head. IR was released amid a resurgence in experimental music. When i think back on Hail to the Thief, it was released amid excitement about String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic and Phish. Also as country music was beginning to take over mainstream and… I guess… people just weren’t ready for a very electronic and experimental album. It was maybe a year shy of being “refreshing.”
I loved it, and it is my 2nd favorite Radiohead album behind Kid A. I think Amnesiac and OKC tie for 3rd. Tomorrow I might feel differently. In Rainbows was a good collection of singles. It has some really good songs, they just don’t seem to congeal into an album, and like someone said prior, it really tails off at the end.

Honestly, I was never into Radiohead until after In Rainbows. I like IR, but I feel like the “old-timers” are right on this one. After getting a bunch of their older albums, I now rarely listen to In Rainbows.
I got into Radiohead at 16, about a year and a half before IR was released, at the recommendation of an older cousin of mine (OK computer was the first album I heard), and at that point no one I knew from school and such even cared about Radiohead or had heard of them. Yet suddenly one day in 2008 my school is plagued with annoying hipster wannabes who claim to “love” Radiohead, yet they have not heard anything other than In Rainbows or the song Creep. Meaning that where I live, pretending to be an indie “hipster” became the ‘in’ thing to do. Note that these kids were listening to rap and wearing Abercrombie just two fucking months before. So yeah, many of the younger fans are total poseurs, though not all of us are like that and it kind of sucks to be bunched with them.

I really wish they hadn’t taken that 5 year hiatus. who knows what they might have created if they hadn’t had such a crisis of confidence, they sort of ducked out in their prime. In Rainbows is fantastic but I really wish they’d have released something a year or two after HTTT (which imo is criminally underrated). looking forward to the next album
For all the bashing going on towards OOS’s comment, I can see where he/she is coming from. Not exactly the complaint against mid-tempo jams, but the album felt too syrupy and tame. As if they had a bunch of songs that sounded great and edgier when they played them live, and then decided to tone them down in the studio and add a bunch of strings. It wasn’t progressive in any real way. I’ll take the half-baked Amnesiac that at least attempted to forge new ground over In Rainbows any day. And it is their second “worst” record.
Okay I’ll break it down for you all once and for all…
When talking about Radiohead’s music… When compared to most other mainstream music (and plenty of indie too), Radiohead just make better quality songs. Period. Liking Radiohead’s music doesn’t make you “cool” or “hip”. Good music will always attract listeners, simple as that. Don’t over think it. It’s not that complicated. As a fan, I sometimes forget that it took me some time for Radiohead’s music to grow on me, so I understand those who bash them all the time.
As far as comparing RH’s music to RH’s music..
It’s simple:
Pablo Honey —> Good. Half the songs are really good. Including Creep.
The Bends —> Great. Unforgettable songs but with a few fillers. High & Dry is overrated.
OK Computer –> Classic. The one everyone has/will treasure forever (Unless RH outdo it)
Kid A —> Excellent. This is post-millenium concept art at it’s finest. Love it.
Amnesiac –> Semi-Classic. Amazing songs. Weak as a whole. My fave songs are on here.
Hail To The Thief –> Good. This is Radiohead being self-conscious and playing it safe.
In Rainbows —> Excellent. Will be remembered years from now when everything else sucks.
Re: In Rainbows… I don’t know where some of you feel IR is nothing but b-sides. Nude was a song they waited to release because they felt it needed to sound they way they felt it deserved to sound.
I agree with you mostly except you should have mentioned Blow Out. It is, in my opinion, the only song on Pablo Honey that truly hints and how exceptional they’ll become.

In Rainbows is a brilliant album.
It is Radiohead coming back from space but rather than putting their feet back on the ground, they went into the ocean and came back up with the most organic, sensual album ever.
To be honest, I think Amnesiac is the best Radiohead album. It’s just beautiful and haunting, and has managed to touch me in ways no music has done before. OKC and Kid A are tied at a very close second, both amazing and classic albums. In Rainbows and The Bends are those types of albums that are amazing on the first few listens, but then they begin to lose that initial magic for some reason, just my opinion.
As for HTTT and Pablo Honey, I just don’t care about them at all.

This RH debate is always entertaining. Long-time (old) fan here. I absolutely love IR – from the first listen. I don’t think it’s a perfect effort but it’s pretty damn close. I’m really excited for some new material and another US tour.

I personally love every era, they all have their strong points. I’m more partial to their mid-tempo tracks and guitar driven ones, but less to their crazy electronics (save for idioteque, of course). Just my pocket change.
