NHL Player Picks Up Hitchhiking Bono
This sounds like the beginning of a joke, or a porno, or some kind of fever dream: The AP reports that Edmonton Oilers center Gilbert Brule was driving with his girlfriend through Vancouver on Tuesday when he stopped to pick up Bono, who was hitchhiking along the side of the road with his assistant. Turns out Bono and his assistant went for a stroll when they got caught in a bad rainstorm. (There’s no photographic evidence of this story, so I created an artist’s rendering of the event, above.) Brule and his girlfriend debated on whether they should pick up the stranger, but they took a chance and ended up with tickets and backstage passes to U2’s show the next night in Edmonton. The couple even sold their tickets to the first game of the Stanley Cup to fly to the show. Bono took a break during the Edmonton show to thank his rescuers: “I like people who play ice hockey, they stop for hitchhikers, I know this from experience. I was hitchhiking in Vancouver yesterday, actually I was! And this guy and his girlfriend picked me up. He was cool, an ice hockey player, his name was Gilbert Brule as it happens, I’m so grateful I’ve decided I want to be Gilbert Brule…” He also compared his bandmates to former Oilers, including The Edge to “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky.
