the 2007 gummy awards logo

It’s that colder, darker time of year when we ask Stereogum readers to determine the best records and bands from the past twelve months. You may remember most of these categories from the 2006 Gummys, but we’ve made a few changes!

Best Album, Best Video, and Best Live Act should be self-explanatory, but for Album we wanna know your top three (everyone’s top nom is weighted the most; choice #3 the least). Mr. Indie Rock/Ms. Indie Rock (vote for one or both) should go to the hottie who most makes your heart (and etc) sizzle. Then comes the Most Overrated Act award. This one should go to the band you read too much about (here or elsewhere) in 2007.

Something to keep in mind when you vote: This year the fields are enabled with auto-fill that will suggest likely candidates if you start typing (and have JavaScript enabled). This makes our lives easier because people have terrible spelling. So please take that extra two seconds, and if your choice is suggested, click it.

Also keep your eyes on the finish line: Polls close 12/6 at 6 PM EST. After we board up the voting booth, we’ll tally the results and randomly pick an entrant who, courtesy of Other Music, will receive the top 50 CDs as determined by Stereogum readers.

If you’re looking to jog your memory, here’s what rocked our stereos this year.

Without further ado, click here to get it started in here. Feel free to start arguing now.

  1. Looking forward to the obligatory Amy Winehouse “Best Use of Drugs While On Stage” award

  2. Darren  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

    Radiohead FTW

  3. Clete  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

The next guy who says Radiohead is getting kicked in the nuts. Remember Aqueduct’s Or Give Me Death when you’re voting for the 2nd or 3rd spot album.

  4. Brian  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

    Beirut FTW

  5. luke jr  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

ariel pink and cass mccombs put on a fine show together!

  6. Matt  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

Next time, don’t make all of the fields required. I had no idea who to vote for for best video, and it wouldn’t let me leave it blank or put something like “none of the above”. You’re going to get skewed results because people are just going to hit a letter and pick the first band that comes up with that name.

  7. Sean  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

    ^^^
Hence my vote for 50 Cent as Mr. Indie Rock!

  8. Brian  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

If you need a best video of 2007, Vote Beirut – Elephant Gun. it’s a 2007 video.

  9. rei  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

i agree. some of the fields i would have preferred to leave blank (like best video)

oh well. i do loves me some kanye… SO, kanye for mr. indie 2007! (??)

  10. @ Matt/rel

Good thinking — OK, we are revising this so not everything is required. Hold tight…

  11. Brian  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

most overrated… THE HOLD STEADY. ugh, awful, boring, overrated band.

  12. Jesse  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

Hold Steady overrated?…. You like Deerhunter, don’t you (I kid. Sort of.). I’ll take a moment to pimp A Place to Bury Strangers.

  13. ok, by popular acclaim, only the albums are mandatory (how hard is it to pick 3 you liked?)

    everything else is optional.

  14. Elliot  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

The Hold Steady is for people who don’t feel comfortable listening to Bruce Springsteen.

Best Video: Kanye West (ft. Zach Galifianakis) – Can’t Tell Me Nothin’
This shouldn’t even be a contest.

Ms. Indie Rock: Alice Glass (Crystal Castles) because she is badass as all hell.

  15. Common  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

Best Albums: Justice. Kanye. That’s it.

Best Video: Kanye West (ft. Zach Galifianakis) – Can’t Tell Me Nothin’
This shouldn’t even be a contest.

Also, Kanye West for Mr. Indie Rock. He’s more hipster than the NYU undergraduate student base combined.

    AGREED

  16. Jessica  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

OK, if it’s one of the options that pop up when I type it in, why does the form keep spitting the Tiny Vipers album back at me? And what about albums that aren’t options when I type them in (i.e., I have to type the artist and title in because it’s not been put in yet)? WTF? If my voting options were limited, I wish I’d known before I attempted to fill the form out.

  17. mike  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

why is there both a fiest and a leslie feist when choosing mrs. indie 2007?

  18. stef-k  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

    ERA VULGARIS

  19. The Spilken8r  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

I’m just have to say, for me the #1 of 2007 is…

    Boxer.

    Word.

  20. stereogum needs more choices for best album. . .i know they want to keep the process manageable, but it was difficult to strike a balance between big-upping good records that i think deserve attention and big-upping good records that also deserve accolades but which anybody actually bothering to fill this out already very likely owns. . .

  21. @claire- you can nominate anything, though! we seeded it with a couple, but if enough people nominate any artist/video/album/person, it’ll come up as a suggestion.

  22. oh, and @mike- that’s because SOME PEOPLE punch in “Feist” instead of waiting for “Leslie Feist” to come up.

@jessica- what are you trying to nominate? send an email to web at stereogum dot com and i’ll figure out what the problem is.

  23. chris  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

it is always fun to see how many people like ‘blog band’ junk through things like this. so much fun.

  24. bobobob  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

    mrs. indie = st. vincent

    yummy

  25. NotLilyAllen  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

Ms Indie Rock = Maya Arulpragasam (M.I.A.)

  26. Win "Basketball Stealin'" Butle  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

arcade fire = most overrated band of 2007. for real.

  27. t.  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

    most overrated: justice

  28. jonathan  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

most overrated band of 2007: your moms cock
    what a silly category
you are silly for making it stereogum

  29. Covertchic  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

Is Kanye the only mr. indie anyone can come up with? One name:Justin Harris

  30. dave  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

    ^^^^^^^^^^
i would have voted for justin but his name wasn’t an auto-complete option.

did you know he was a high school baseball star?

  31. bleep  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

    err. zach condon, please.

  32. ×  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

Mr. Indie Rock = Britt Daniel

    Oh yes.

  33. brief  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

    Mr. Indie = Spencer Krug

  34. stephen  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

I love how Tom McRae’s 2007 album “King Of Cards” just seemed fly right past Stereogum without a mention.

Hell, I even had to type the whole thing into the entry field.

  35. Neilo  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

I just voted and realised that I forgot about a whole pile of deadly bands who released awesome records this years. SHIT!!! I don’t think it’d be fair to vote again though.

  36. ko  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

don’t forget about all those early releases. these things always get skewed towards Q4 releases. for me, low’s ‘drums and guns’ and white rabbits ‘fort nightly’ are a quality as any other this year. and most overrated has to be dan deacon. that’s a fact.

  37. amy  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

i’m with ko. dan deacon = overrated 2k7.

and don’t forget menomena! (even though we all had friend and foe in ’06…)

  38. Chris Davis  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

or any other random spirit lover…

  39. ko  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

oh yeah, menomena! dang, forgot about that one. it’s definitely as good as anything else this year.

  40. call me crazy, but i have Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga as my no 1 this year…

  41. 3 albums is a tough short list. I’m sure in about 10 minutes I’ll remember something awesome that I totally forgot.

  42. in no particular order:

    miracle fortress
    lcd soundsytem
    spoon
    feist
    cafe tacuba

  43. Erin  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

Mr. Indie Rock is now, has always been, and always will be Britt Daniel. There is basically no other choice — and not just because all other choices are lanky-haired date rapists (Win Butler, I am talking about you).

  44. ETW  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

    Needs more Okkervil love

  45. Vanilla Thunder  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

Jens Lekman, Jens Lekman, Jens Lekman.

  46. bobobob  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

i dont think i’ve seen panda bear mentioned yet…….

    come on

  47. How could anything but Battles’ video for Atlas be the best video? Yes the Zach Galifinktitus video is quite funny, but it’s way more comedy skit than video. Unfortunately, Atlas was way too early in the year and it’s played out among the hipsters.

  48. Steve Balboni  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2007 0

Don’t worry, bobobob. I got your Panda Bear. I put Animal Collective as “Most Overrated.”

  49. bobobob,

i dropped Panda Bear in at #3…

almost put animal Collective as most overrated…but opted for of Montreal instead.
