YOB - Atma

Oregon doom trio Yob’s “comeback” fifth album The Great Cessation, the first post-Middian/Age Eternal offering under the Yob name since 2005′s The Unreal Never Lived, landed at No. 6 on my 30 Best Metal Albums Of 2009. In the accompanying writeup, I focused on mainman Mike Scheidt’s masterful “Wino-on-Deathspell Omega” vocal performance (and quoted the man from our earlier interview to bolster my “apocalypse” angle). Of course, outside that inhuman howl, there were also the endless riffs: There’s a reason the NY Times suggested Yob “may very well be one of the best bands in America…” Might was well replace the “may” with an “is” after listening to the five-song, 55-minute Atma. It’s a crustier, sludgier, dirtier, more in-your-face and sorta “heavy rock” collection that manages to feel both down-to-earth intimate and outer-realms airy by the time you reach the end of closer “Adrift In The Ocean.” For now, here’s standout opener “Prepare The Ground.” Grab a lighter — for multiple reasons.

Atma tracklist:

01 “Prepare The Ground” (9:05)
02 “Atma” (8:57)
03 “Before We Dreamed Of Two” (16:00)
04 “Upon The Sight Of The Other Shore” (7:34)
05 “Adrift In The Ocean” (13:33)

Atma is out 8/16 in the US and 8/22 in the UK via Profound Lore. Scott Kelly appears on “Before…” and “Adrift…” YOB’s heading on tour with brutally loud labelmates, Florida duo Dark Castle. Don’t miss:

  1. Well. Now that Autopsy has delivered, Yob is my #1 most anticipated album right now. Good to hear it’s getting some positive attention.

Some of the best vocals in the biz but “Wino-on-Deathspell Omega”??? I don’t get it.

    • Ha, that was for the last album. He had that classic stoner doom thing mixed here and there with a harsher blackened howl. Still the darkest material they’ve done. You don’t get that on the new album, but he tapped into it on ‘The Great Cessation’.

  2. I didn’t even know YOB was releasing anything, Nice! I really dig the cover artwork too..

Speaking of which I got into a conversation about cover art with my friend when the new Artwork for Opeth’s album came out. I personally think artwork is very important, bad artwork wouldn’t steer me away from an album, but good artwork can really make me like an album more. My friend thinks it is completely irrelevant to anything. I like my bands to have the full package personally, any thoughts?

    • Yeah, I think artwork’s really important: It helps sustain and expand (or complete) the overall mood/feel. (I feel the same way re: book covers.)

  3. That’s a really cool cover. Oh and, uh, track, too.
