Today’s Bonnaroo line-up’s got Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Grizzly Bear, and TV On The Radio all back to back. So basically Brooklynroo. With its nursery rhyme melody and visceral cruel summer imagery, Animal Collective’s “Summertimes Clothes” is the most accessible track on an album praised for being not entirely inaccessible. The colorful, trippy video, directed by longtime collaborator Danny Perez, features pulsing lights, fire and ice, and Brooklyn’s bedsheet-clad FLEX dance crew (as seen on TV) writhing inside plastic bubbles. It’s sort of freaking me out! I probably shouldn’t have eaten so many peanut butter cups! Anyway, my unicorn is melting so enjoy the freak show…

The “Summertime Clothes” single (12″ and digital) is out 7/7 and features three remixes, including this killer boogie funk take from LA’s Dâm-Funk.

You don’t think My Girls is more accessible? Both great songs, though.

  2. Freaky fuckin awesome

  3. steve holt  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

did this video ruin the song for anyone else?

  4. George  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

    and both horrific videos

  5. This is one of my favorite songs of the year thus far. Too bad the video is so meh.

  6. trippy video… off the album of the year?? haha

  7. Animal Collective are incapable of making a decent music video. Dream with me for a second: a new AC video directed by Hype Williams that is a scene-by-scene recreation of Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize”

  8. Love the dancing burqa

  9. elenio  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

this seems like a lot of work for something so “meh…” My Girls is 100 times better

this looks too much like a commercial for a new vegas show

  11. Chuck  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

    Wait, best video of 2009?

  12. HappyParts values this group?s sound more so then the the Dirty P?s. HappyParts digs the Beach Boys Gristle. Plus the search engine optimization factor is amazin?. I?ll be doing a scientific test over the next 3 weeks: Bear Vs. Projector Vs. Collective. Who will win the cage match?

  13. This. Is. Life.

  14. i like animal collective a lot….this video is terrible. the end.

  15. This video was such a disappointment for me. I was hoping for some greater interpretation of or meaningful insight into one of my favorite songs of the year. Or even just hipsters falling in love in the wee hours of the Brooklyn night whilst playing pranks on drunk frat guys and late-night food patrons. Instead we got what looks like a FLEX fan vid/art school project/self-promoting video where the music takes the backseat.

Not good…well they’re kind of post MTV…that’s what’s so VERY fucking refreshing about it…worth looking into New Yorker…

  17. Two Heads or The Book I READ  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

The two most powerful animation movies for me were both old school…”Yellow Submarine” and the Picasso documentary were he’s painting right on the glass before your eye’s…I didn’t see either until my 20′s…

holy shit am i tired of this band

  19. Evan  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

Holy god, what an awful music video.

But the song is still the best I’ve heard all year.

  20. Not at all the treatment I would have chose, but this song kept me going during the cold NY winter.

  21. Really interesting video. I like the middle “When the sun goes down we’ll go out again” section.

Anyone else sick of these guys constantly saying “we do not do drugs” and then putting out videos like this?

    • No, not really. I don’t do drugs, but I still enjoy engaging, colorful, dynamic visuals.

    • Carlos  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

Just out of curiosity, when did they say they don’t do drugs? I’ve read an interview in which they say they record sober, from which I inferred that they do other things not sober. Like come up with ideas.

  23. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

Why did they do that? Incoherent.

  24. thismess  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

“Dream with me for a second: a new AC video directed by Hype Williams that is a scene-by-scene recreation of Notorious B.I.G.’s ‘Hypnotize’ ”

  25. did anyone else notice their penis legs?

  26. alvysinger  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

jesus h this band is awful live. just pathetic.

  27. glazzy  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

    That’s cruel Bonnaroo.

  28. I guess nothing happened in music today.

  29. Anyone ever watch Spaced? There was one episode where Brian is invited to an art show by his ex-partner (VULVA!!!!). It culminates into a performance art piece that can only be described as “weird for weird’s sake”. From the DVD special features, Edgar Wright and co. were trying to poke fun at the supposed “genius” of postmodern art gone too far. It was almost as if they were saying Duchamp already did it, now let’s move on. This video would be the exact thing they would make fun of, and that makes me sad.

    Vulva Video:

  30. No points for D.I.Y. production values? I thought you kids weren?t corporate. You can?t get Jerry Bruckheimer videos without mass market appeal. Can?t you see they?re just giving you a chance to ?get it? while yr not-as-cool-friends are like: ?that video is wack? you can be like ?you just don?t understand the deep phenomenology of dance and movement?.
Feel free to disagree, but if yr counting on a video to help bring more meaning and insight into a song, yr probably not even getting yr ankles wet in it.

And is it really so surprising that an Animal Collective video would turn out weird, and obtuse? The ?Water Curses? video ?which owned- was a 4 minute optical illusion. If you ask me, these guys are doing you a favor with this one.
I could have done without the liquid spraying hair-flip, which looked retarded even back in the ?head like a hole? days, but it?s sufficiently colorful, sufficiently weird. Win.

  31. um sexually aroused but visually disgusted

  32. david  |   Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 0

Hey Paul, have you got something for the trick-or-treaters?

  33. One of my favorite songs on the album, but the video looks like a video of a live performance. Would’ve been a really cool live show, but makes for a creepy, boring video.

  34. Can sterogum talk about somthing other than Aminal Collective. Please.

  35. animal collective’s still got it. it’s all about the visual experience and less about what makes a majority happy.

  36. Animal Collective > Animal Collective’s Videos

  37. those are the most colourful burqas I’ve ever seen…

  38. Wick Nilson  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

Not as cool as the Two Weeks video…

  39. Rop  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

Heard AC sucked at Bonnaroo and had no energy

Heard st vincent, grizzly bear and DP all fucking rocked

  40. I guess I need one of those peanut butter cups to get the video. Nice song though.

  41. dexter  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

p4k said the sound mix was flat for AC at bonnaroo…i watched them on the webcast and thought they were pretty good, but nowhere near as great as the Toronto show a few weeks back, they should have played in the evening. dig the video.

  42. Is it better to be on acid while watching this?

  43. anonymous  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

for the record, this song isn’t really about two hipsters running around the city at night…

if that video would make you feel nice, make it yourself maybe, because they’re definitely not going to do it.

  44. derek  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

    nice crab legs!

  45. Rob S.  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

David Lynch just called to say, “Holy shit, that was weird.”

  46. I wonder if the band actually thought people would think this music video is a really good music video.

  47. blah  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009 0

Is a video engaging if, by the 2:00 mark, I’ve begun reading the posts and let the audio-only soundtrack my scrolling?

  48. AG  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2009 0

At first this video was horrible. I saw the thumbnail and my mind was filled with a lot of cool imagery that they could have used. Then I actually watched it. I have to say I’m glad it’s nothing definite though. I have a vivid image in my mind of what this song describes, and I like that the song is the band’s, but mine to interpret still. Maybe the song would have been ruined having a different face to attach to a man lying in his pool-like bed, gazing at his flaming walls.

  49. zb  |   Posted on Jun 18th, 2009 0

    my brain just exploded.
i like the song a lot….the vid more reminded me of one of their concerts. wish i knew what the fuck was happening…
