It’s been a dramatic, breakout year in the life of our favorite Sir Lankan agit-pop siren, and you could look at “Paper Planes” as a microcosm for all that madness. Before the ’breakout’ — #9 Album, #4 Hottie — there was the ’breakup,’ with producer and bf Diplo … but not before the couple memorably duetted on a nascent version of “Paper Planes” in one of the most adorably hip home videos we’ve seen all year. Fast forward months and take the track to Letterman for a live performance, wherein CBS replaced the percussive gunshots for some other weak popping noise, resulting in a pretty awkward nationally televised performance and a very pissed Arulpragasam (she complained to us shortly thereafter at ACL). And now, this. Via MayaSpace:

SO THEY TRIED TO SHUT ME DOWN AGAIN. I MADE THE PAPER PLANES VIDEO. I MADE IT HOW THEY WANTED. NO VIOLENCE. AMBIGUOUS. MTV – FRIENDLY. NOW TODAY, I CHECK YOUTUBE AND SEE THE LEAKED MTV PAPER PLANES VIDEO UP FOR THE FIRST TIME. I CLICKED ON IT AND OUT COMES THIS FUCKED UP MESS WITH DOUBLE-TRACKED BULLSHIT MESS

WHO THE THE FUCK IS DOING THIS TO ME?????

THE VIDEO WAS SABOTAGED FOR WHATEVER REASON AND IM DISAPPOINTED THAT MTV HAS HAD SUCH A MAJOR ROLE IN THIS. THE BLOGGERS WHO ARE LAZY ENOUGH TO FOLLOW THE MTV LINK AND POST UP AND COMMENT ON THE SOUND WHEN THAT HASNT BEEN COMPROMISED AND THE GUNSHOT ARENT REPLACED AND EDITED MAKES ME SAD. I DID FIGHT FOR THE SOUND , BECAUSE PUTTING MEANINGS IN YOUR VIDEOS, IN MY OPINION IS A DYING ART. I CAN FILM MY SELF ANYWHERE ANYTIME AND LET YOU KNOW THE TRUTH , BUT THE SONG IS WHAT I WANTED TO PRESERVE IN THIS CASE.

But it’s all better now — the MTV version has been DMCA’s off YouTube, and the real, guns ’n’ cash registers M.I.A.-approved iteration is here for your enjoyment. After all that build-up, the video’s really just eh, but look it is Maya’s day, so we shall celebrate. Vid and full MySpace vent session after the jump. Keep your eyes out for some Beastie Boys.

PAPER PLANES VIDEO
LOOK I KNOW THERE ARE HATERS OUT THERE, I DEAL WITH IT EVERYDAY THATS NO FUCKING BIG DEAL AND IVE DEALT WITH WORSE IN MY LIFE, A FEW PEOPLE TALKING SHIT DONT MATTER TO ME, BUT TWISTING TRUTH ISNT THE LESSON I WANNA LEARN IN MY TIME IN MUSIC, SO WHO EVER THAT IS DOING IT , I WANNA SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

1, I ORIGINALLY WANTED TO SHOOT THE VIDEO IN A FACTORY ON THE BORDER OF
EQUADOR, BUT COULDNT. I WAS TOURING THE U.S, I COULDA BEEN ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD RIGHT THEN BUT THERE I WAS IN AMERICA, IN NYC, IN BROOKLYN, IN BEDSTUY , I WAS TORN BETWEEN SCRAPIN SHOWS IN AMERICA AND MEETING AMERICAN FANS OR SHOOTING IN NYC ON MY ONLY DAY OFF I’D HAD IN 4 MONTHS AND GETTING ON WITH IT.

2, SO THAT WAS THAT! I NEVER MADE A VIDEO IN AMERICA AND HEY ITS STILL A PART OF WHAT I DO AND SAY, ITS WAS STILL VALID, SO I WAS READY TO ROLL WITH IT.

3, YOU ALL KNOW HOW THE SONG SOUNDS, THATS WHY WHEN U GO ON YOUTUBE 400, 000 PEOPLE WOULD RATHER LISTEN THE SONG AS IT IS AND STARE AT SOME PICTURE THEN TO ACTUALLY WATCH A VIDEO

4, WHEN LETTERMAN CENSORD ME IT WAS WAC OF COURSE!!!!!! , AND YES I FELT SOOOOOO BAD FOR WHAT THEY DID TO MY SOUND. I WAS ABEL TO SOUND CHECK FOR THAT SHOW AND THEY LET ME SOUND CHECK FINE, THEN ON THE ACTUAL TAPING MY SOUND WAS SOOO DIFFERENT FROM WHAT ID AGREED, AS SOON AS I OPENED MY MOUTH THE DIFFERENCE BLEW ME AWAY, I FELT I WAS GETTING BULLIED ON NATIONAL TELEVISON, AND I COULDNT EVEN REACH OUT TO MY LABELS OR MY MANAGEMENT TO HELP, SINCE THEY ARE NEW TO WHAT HAPPENS TO AN ARTIST LIKE ME IN MAINSTEAM AMERICAN CULTURE.

Hmm…well serves you right for being an ‘MTV artist of the week’ I guess. This song is awesome though, once I heard the chorus a few months ago at a friends house I was hooked.

Aren’t the real lyrics for that part “All I wanna do is (bang bang bang bang) MURDER, and take your money” ??

  2. Evan  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

So.. the real question is who the fuck cares? MIA is overrated horse shit.

  3. Eric  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

I’ve only seen the version with gunshots. Is this the sound that got fucked over in the mtv version? I think the video’s not that bad. I like the part where she’s walking down the street with her posse, and the giving out bread along with the beastie boys cameo is alright. The only cringe worthy part is the cheezy paper planes animation. It reminds me of some commercial.

  4. jacub  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

    maya is the SHIT,
she’s the best out there, always fresh + innovative.
you keep on listening to 50 cent or whatever.

the real lyrics of the original chorus were
‘all i wanna do is sum sum sum sum and a boom boom boom and take your money’ :D
(which is also the chorus of the unreleased track ‘hit that’).

the video is alright, she explained why there isn’t that much action in it.

  5. so much for the land of the free.

i guess i can see how they would censor it. knee jerk reaction to a gunshot blast. when really the song has nothing to do with violence. i suppose eventually some right wing idiot will blame MIA for the next kid who shoots up a 7-11.

  6. fletcher  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

All I want to know is…who is Sir Lankan? When was he knighted?

har har har. Typos are funny.

  7. ELK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

I’ve got no issues with M.I.A, and I really like ‘Paper Planes’. The thing I don’t get is WRITING EVERYTHING IN CAPITOL LETTERS. GOD, WON’T YOU PLEASE TURN OF YOUR CAPSLOCK WHILE BEING SO ANGRY WITH MTV? WRITING LIKE THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT MORE INTERESTING OR TRUE!

  8. JZ  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

Yeah, she needs to turn off the caps lock and shut up. Has she hooked up with Zach de la Rocha yet? That would be a perfect pairing. They could sit around and compare persecution complexes.

  9. lmao @ “the real american version with gunshots”. These low-fi clips are running amok in underground music.

  10. tablesandchairs  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

    BEASTIE BOYS

  11. Someone get her a lubricant for that CAPS LOCK key. Nice remake of The Clash’s “Straight to Hell”! What am I supposed to feel by the use of her “real gunshots?” She is pretty hot. Maybe she’ll warrant some coverage over at the new Rock Town Hall: http://www.rocktownhall.com/blogs/index.php?title=hot_rocks&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1.

  12. Liz  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

I don’t understand why MTV has a problem with this exactly… they play videos of rappers with guns and ladies all sexed up pretty much whenever those stupid kids from the hills aren’t on tv. It’s all very depressing.

  13. collen f  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

Overrated shit. Tori Amos destroys her in every way possible and more.

  14. max  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

I don’t get it, what’s so “fresh & innovative” about this? She “sings” over a sample of the Clash’s “Straight To Hell” and the “original chorus” (‘all i wanna do is sum sum sum sum and a boom boom boom’) is lifted from Wreckx-N-Effect’s 1992 hit “Rump Shaker.”

    Overrated.

  15. sdfsd  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

i guess because she is not a fugly pasty white girl (j lewis, FEIST etc..) stereogum isn’t going to kiss her ass.

why should she give a fuck what a bunch of tools (STEREOGUM) think of her music?

  16. arcade bitch  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

    M. I. A. while innovative seems like a total “street” poser in her video

please she wishes she was “Street” she should have stuck to being a “hipster party girl” , it’s what she does best.
    NOT THAT GOOD!

  17. i hate you guys  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

boy, you kids sure like to ruin fun. MIA ist rad.

  18. kooky  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

    Go MIA!

  19. biguns  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2007 0

CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR *AWESOME*

  20. Ryan  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2007 0

Tori Amos is so out of context. Whatever that comment was…

  21. D-Ford  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2007 0

I’m all for artist freedom and anti-censorship, but the concept of the gunshot drop in general is kinda lame. Whenever I hear it in generic rap music, i can’t help but laugh hysterically. It sounds so hilarious for some reason. Really, it must be erased completely from pop culture. Anybody with me?

  22. Matty  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2007 0

The track is amazing. I wish she had been able to get to Equador because the video is lame. Cool though to the see the Beastie Boys. I hope she continues to work with Diplo in the future despite them going their separate ways.

  23. Nice Beastie Boys cameo. I want Hello Nasty pt. 2.

  24. Victoria  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2007 0

Couldn’t hear it at work but I like what I saw.

Loved the Metalica shirt and the Cameos of Ad Rock and Mike D.

The dinner shot with the guy in the back ground, was that a Cross Colors jacket?

I like M.I.A. but hate the fashion sense. The early/mid 90′s are over. Please stop 90′s/New Rave crap!

  25. what?  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2007 0

“Overrated shit. Tori Amos destroys her in every way possible and more.”

Wait, what? Just because they’re the same general product (female musicians) doesn’t mean they’re in competition or comparable in any way. One probably doesn’t even know the other exists.

  26. Jesse  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2007 0

…Yeah. One of the best albums of the year. I’m sure we’ll all be spinning this “classic” in 2012.

  27. Truth WILLIAMS  |   Posted on Dec 19th, 2007 0

MIA, your music is good, you are wack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bitchin about MTV, when you playin after ‘THE HILLS’, really bitch, you are MF WACK, play to the 9 yr olds, they’ll believe the hype
