UK press is reporting that the troubled British R&B singer died in her home today of a suspected drug overdose, though cause of death is still officially unexplained. Despite recently completing a rehab program, Winehouse had to cancel a European tour following a disastrous performance in Belgrade. Like Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix, Winehouse was 27 years old.

There are a fair few who have screamed out in some sort of rage/bemoaning about this hubbub surrounding her death (with those seemingly finding it hard to believe that people could be empathic towards more than one thing at once, as evident in the first comment, quite common). But there are plenty of others who have claimed the ‘great status’ with similar backgrounds John Belushi could have had a massive, Bill Murray-esque (Peter Venkman was created for him), film career before dying of a speedball after becoming a heavy drug user. Still, he is greatly regarded. Similar with River Phoenix, Chris Farley, Brad Renfro. And musicians like Jay Reatard, Joplin and even Jeff Buckley. History will set her as great because of her music, regardless of what happened around or after that…

I see your point, but it kind of aggravates me to see people say things like, “She deserved it because she (allegedly) had a drug problem.” I just feel like everyone has emotional problems. I mean, if those people who said she deserved it passed away, they most likely wouldn’t want people saying about them, “They had a few tough times, so they should’ve died anyways.” I suppose it’s easy to say things about someone you’ve never met, because there’s no consequences.

I’m more sad at the talent we lost than the actual person. But while I’m certainly not glad that she’s dead, it’s too bad someone else didn’t have her persona and voice.

Probably going to come across as insensitive, but I don’t care about this point. I understand she was grappling with addiction but she had something most addicts don’t have: multiple chances. She’s been in and out of some of the best rehab facilities in the world. I get that addiction is a disease you never overcome, I’ve seen it ruin members of my own family, but she had opportunities that very few ever get. Maybe it’s because I’ve been repeatedly let down by family members, and myself, in regard to this and I’m transferring my anger on to her but I can’t feel much sympathy here. She was given an immense gift with her voice, and she wasted it.
I never understand people like you who say “Wow, such a waste.” Her voice most definitely WASN’T a waste. People got a chance to hear it, love it, hate it, etc…so, in what way was that wasteful? Yes, she died young, but people always miss the fact that no one ever could had heard her. She never had to make a record at all.
People say the same thing when it comes to Kurt Cobain, “Oh, what a waste.” It’s true that these artists could have lived longer, but that’s water under the bridge now. It’s a total insult for me to say those 2 artists are a waste, it’s just so untrue.
Someone like Winehouse or Cobain could’ve lived to have long careers producing amazing art. What they left was only a small sample of what they could’ve given the world. If you have that kind of ability or talent, while it isn’t your obligation to give anything to anyone, if you choose to do so and then squander that ability because of mistakes then that’s a waste. It’s a distinct possibility that that no one ever could have heard her, yes, and then that probably would’ve been a better choice because then this wouldn’t have hurt as many as it did.

naive because it’s largely uninformed, self-absorbed because you are projected your experience onto what is really an individual issue. also, the world only has a sample of art from countless artists. do you say the same of van gogh? or hell, elliot smith?
Uninformed, how? She had multiple opportunities to clean up. People tried to help her. She refused.
Also, we all project our experiences onto other events. It’s the only way people have of understanding the information they’re being given to process. How people view events is going to vary based on their personal experiences, so in a way every reaction is self-absorbed.
van Gogh suffered throughout his life from severe bouts with undetermined mental illnesses. He committed suicide because of this. His death was a tragedy because he did seek help to the point that he even had himself committed but he still couldn’t overcome it. So yes, his death was a waste in the sense that an individual with immense talent was also crippled with severe problems preventing him from fully realizing it; but, no, he himself was not responsible for wasting that talent. Winehouse was selfish. I feel for her friends and family because of what they tried to do for her and the pain they’re suffering from, but I can’t feel sympathy for someone who didn’t even think she had a problem.
I just lost another friend yesterday and even though I have never listened to a song by her (not a fan), I completely understand people’s sorrow for this loss. For me, part of being human is empathy. Death, while a part of life, is still tragic. The loss of potential is tragic. RIP.

She had it coming, everybody knew she was in serious trouble, yet nothing serious was done by so-called friends nor family. Laws should be made to lock up these people until they’re rehabbed. They’re no good to society and cause nothing but pain to themselves and others, and are negative role models for kids. She obviously had no clue about life so the decision should have been taken out of her hands. She should’ve gone to rehad- yes yes yes!!!
Funny thing is that she never claimed to be a role model for kids. And anyway, you’ve got to be a fucking STUPID kid if you’re looking a musicians and/or TV personalities to be your role models.
