You guys. America is so great! It’s basically The Very Best (Featuring Ezra Koenig). Can you name another country that has a holiday where the sole intention is to celebrate the contribution independent record labels have made on the shape of pop music? Pretty much only the USA. These colors don’t run too much.

“Don’t tread on me” – James Hetfield.

To help with your civic duty of taking stock of the past year in MP3s, we’ve assembled a mix of the sunnier side of 2009′s highlights. As always, these tracks are totally free, just like America. This weekend isn’t just about celebrating music, though. It is also about celebrating the right to drink on roofs with good friends in good weather. So this mix isn’t a mood-spanner. It’s upbeat! And sequenced for consumption on a cloudless day, with a crew, buddies, BBQ, and booze. Or a patriotic jog. A perfectly timed soundtrack, really, since it never rains these days.

01 tUnE-yArDs – “Sunlight”
02 YACHT – “Psychic City”
03 The Very Best (Feat. Ezra Koenig) – “Warm Heart Of Africa”
04 Dirty Projectors & David Byrne – “Knotty Pine”
05 Ganglians – “Hair”
06 Woods – “To Clean”
07 Hospitality – “Betty Wang”
08 Micachu & The Shapes – “Golden Phone”
09 Super Furry Animals – “Inaugural Trams”
10 Phoenix – “1901″
11 Dinosaur Jr – “I Want You To Know”
12 The Thermals – “Now We Can See”
13 Suckers – “It Gets Your Body Movin’”
14 Swan Lake – “Spanish Gold, 2044″

Grab ‘em all with this .zip.

Happy birthday, America!

I’m sorry, how many bloggers did your company lay off? Is the dude from Videogum writing everybody’s posts now?

  5. amrit writing like gabe makes stereogum better

    • What is so Videogum about this? The word ‘basically?’ The phrase ‘you guys?’ Gabe isn’t President of those, you know.

What is super-VG, of course, is the picture of a cake.

      • the whole tone of the post. and yeah, the “you guys”, the “basically”, the parenthetical humor (the parenthetical humor).

but oops! my bad! i always assumed that gabe WAS the president of those sorta things… i just saw where you wrote that (i did not just see where you wrote that), that changes everything! (that does not change anything).

        blah, who cares.

  6. you spelled independence wrong. this site is an idiot.

  8. “this site is an idiot” ? that inanimate object is such an idiot

I am an empty person. I can not unironically love my country.

    We are the hollow men
    We are the stuffed men
    Leaning together
    Headpiece filled with stereogum.

What a disgusting group of people you are, saving any genuine feeling teenager music; you make me sick.

Your post-college yuppie bravado will not bring you peace.

  10. everything is about gabe. hilarious.

yacht’s new album. When did they get so, good?

  12. They became good when all the cool kids told you they did.

  13. Well, I’m going to concentrate on the music… Who cares who wrote it? Definitely not a big deal.

That Super Furry Animals” album is great.

  19. yo where’s Soundgarden’s “4th of July” on this mix? sure it’s dated but it rocks harder than 2/3rds of the songs on this album.

  20. nick  |   Posted on Jul 5th, 2009

but hipsters don’t go for jogs.

  21. The cool kids told me to like Dirty Projectors. Ummm…still waiting for that to kick in.
