It’s always fascinating to hear what Zach Hill, one of our most lyrical, inventive, and most technically gifted drummers, does with his Vinnie Colaiuta-indebted strain of progressive timekeeping and percussive mindfuckery. The focus this season is on Hella, his artful punk/metal/prog/noise-stained project with guitarist Spencer Seim. (Hella are again a duo, after a record as a quintet, 2007’s There’s No 666 In Outer Space.) Their new album is titled Tripper. We’ve heard the “Untitled” lead track, and here, on “Yubacore,” Zach sounds more Steve Gadd fly. Download it:
Tripper is out 8/20 via Sargent House.
