The fast-rising Mississippi rapper/producer Big K.R.I.T. has already released one mixtape this year, the excellent Return Of 4Eva. Over the weekend, he gave the world another one, Last King 2: God’s Machine. Where Return Of 4Eva was more of a fully fleshed-out new album, Last King 2 is mostly a collection of the freelance work K.R.I.T.’s done over the year. But that’s a good thing in its own right, since K.R.I.T.’s been on a crazy roll lately, and his outside work actually covers more aesthetic ground than his own solo stuff.
Last King 2 features collabs with guys like Wiz Khalifa, Yelawolf, Bun B, and Killer Mike. It also features way more of K.R.I.T.’s raspy snarl than Return Of 4Eva did. K.R.I.T.’s empathetic conscious-rap side made Return Of 4Eva a deep and inviting listen, but it also got silly from time to time. That side of K.R.I.T. gets way less airtime on the new tape, where he’s way more concerned with delivering satisfying deep-accented shit-talk. It’s a fun listen, and it’s yours for a couple of clicks at LiveMixtapes.
