St. Vincent’s forthcoming Strange Mercy is one of the most-anticipated releases of that fall; since totally owning some Big Black covers at the Our Band Could Be Your Life tribute concert, her follow-up to 2009′s Actor has put the increasingly edgy project on many tastemakers’ radars. The especially strong “Surgeon” dropped a little earlier this summer, and now here’s the darkly comic clip for Strange Mercy cut “Cruel.” Ms. Clark describes the experience:
These two days are a bit of a blur, but I know in the midst of things I got dunked in water by a 10-year-old child, watched an amateur pyrotechnics demonstration, had some great laughs with the great girls working in wardrobe, learned how to ballroom dance (sort of), and felt incredibly grateful to be working with such talented and sweet people. The rest of it… well, I’ll just have to watch the video to remember…

Strange Mercy is out 9/13 on 4AD.

How lovely.
This woman is impossibly talented. I’m addicted to this song. Now I just need to find a fake I.D. so I can see her play in October!!
Great song / video
Between dumping that stale Lana Del Ray vid, the new Flo and the Machine and this, angry man-hating women who grew up on a diet of Tori Amos lite-alternative are having the best week ever!
How did that dress stay so clean in the grave – bullshit.
One of my favorite things about the immensely talented Annie Clark is her elocution. I mean she really pronounces every syllable of every word…it’s kind of amazing.
This is the record I’ve probably been the most excited about this year, along with the new M83 and Bjork. This is incredible!
Reminded me of Dogtooth a little except it made me want to be good to my wrists, not slit them.

my experiences, and what I have heard in general, have been the exact opposite. perhaps it was a one-off event, or perhaps it just wasn’t your thing? Who knows. She was terrific when I saw her.
when i saw her, she was absolutely fantastic.
yeah, i’ve seen her twice and the second time was even better than the first, which was great. every band has bad shows, but as tom said, perhaps her music isn’t your thing.
kidnapped and forced to play house.
Nice Maggot Brain homage at the end there. I wish I had as much talent as her little toe.
This is pretty exciting.
1…2…3…Sweet!
Annie Clark is still the mother of choice for my children, even after this video. Surgeon was great, Cruel is epic. So far, the new album sounds promising indeed.
She certainly loves the empty/aloof look, doesn’t she?
everything about her is beautiful
