Mercifully, Kanye and Jay-Z took the MTV VMA stage about 20 minutes into the broadcast to perform “Otis.” Daddy-to-be Hov and ‘Ye walked down a long runway replete with American imagery, bypassing a Soy Bomber, and then the existential dread began to sink in as we realized we’re stuck with the Video Music Awards for the remaining 90 minutes after they had thrown their biggest “surprise” punch (Odd Future/”Future Beastie Boys” dance-off notwithstanding).

That was by far the most under-whelming, non-eventful VMAs in quite some time. I don’t watch the show expecting to get anything out of it musically, but at the very least I watch it for a juicy VMA moment people will be talking about the next morning. Here I was expecting OFWGKTA to do something controversial, but they end up being humble in a flood of curse words. Here I am expecting Gaga and Britney to lez it up, but it turns out Britney finally has a sense of self-awareness a decade too late. Jay-Z and Kanye ran around stage while pyro and smoke went off, while Lil’ Wayne just ran around.
Do these awards actually mean anything? No. No, they don’t. Let’s move on, shall we?
