CANT Live @ Mercury Lounge

It’s CANT’s live coming out party in NYC this week. At 1AM this morning, Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor presented his (essentially) solo project’s live-experience to an impressively packed Mercury Loung during a free show with little advance billing. Following a debut 7″ on his own Terrible Records, Taylor’s debut full-length Dreams Come True is out in two weeks and features session work from Terrible recording artist Twin Shadow (George Lewis, Jr.). It’s a dip into musky synth-pop that also amalgamates many of the styles you’ve heard Taylor manipulate via his past, diverse production works (see: Grizzly Bear, Twin Shadow, Dirty Projectors, Class Actress, Blood Orange, Jamie Lidell, etc.). You know this guy.

The lineup we saw last night was the one Taylor will take on tour through October, featuring one man on modular synths and various electronics, backed by drummer Guillermo Brown. Additional guitars, occasional bass, and backup vocals come from Terrible Recs alum and all-around utility player Devonté Hynes, who is apparently the first person people call when they need firepower in a new live project (see also: Rewards). Dude is this Brooklyn generation’s Dave Pajo. (Also, his Blood Orange opened the show.)

If you’re in NYC, you can see the CANT live thing tonight at Glasslands Gallery (Suckers’ Quinn Walker will open that one.) If not, below we have October’s tour dates as well as a trio of videos shot at Merc by reader Gary Canino. Check ’em: (UPDATE: Sorry guys, videos removed. Make it to a show, it’s recommended.)
