Black Lips - “Family Tree" Video (NSFW)

One wondered if, when Black Lips signed up to work with Mark Ronson for Arabia Mountain, the band was maturing, settling down, and focusing on its artwork. I think the new video for “Family Tree” easily dispels that notion — there’s a crucifixion scene (Cole), some Black Lips signature puking, and buckets of pig blood dumped both on bandmembers and women in their underwear. Some things, thankfully, never change. NSFW, but just barely, if your work doesn’t really give a shit anyway.

Arabia Mountain is out now on Vice.

    • They puked on stage at lollapalooza this year. Cole smashed a guitar there, and at webster hall in NY in May. Cole made out with the other guitar player with vomit still in his mouth. His response: “That was gross.” Many beers were shotgunned, many beers were tossed in the crowd. I saw a fat guy jump off the stage and give a woman a concussion. They hand paint banners for every show that are hilarious and dangle gloriously from duct tape behind them. Cole regularly spits into the air and catches it in his own mouth. Maybe you should see them again. Douche.

      • Yeah one of the guitarists lit a string of fire crackers which was dangling from his mouth when i saw ‘em this year. Lots of making out/spit antics too. Best band.

      • yeah spitting in the air and catching it in your mouth, how fucking controversial. ya know even when they make out or shot gun beer or whatever they’re still so fucking low energy and apathetic about everything it’s so obnoxious. and their fans are douchebags. I hate that I was ever counted among them. also homophobic douchebags.

    • I hate so much about the things that you choose to be.

  2. Looks like the Kool-Aid Man is on the rag again…

  3. So let me get this straight – this band is cool because of how much they puke onstage and make out with each other? So the music is secondary to stupid stage gimmicks in regard to how they stay “interesting”?
Ok, cool…because I was really worried there for a minute…whew.

  5. OMG! I LOVE IAN ST. PE! <3

  6. Oh, and also; I love Black Lips. Absolutely my favorite band.

  7. Wow Corban! You totally missed the point.

In nearly every interview, BL are asked about their purported “controversial” antics. The band is completely pigeon-holed by their past penchant for incendiary stage gags, most of this shit they don’t even do anymore.

Making out and subsequently being “chased out of Indiat”, lighting their drum kit on fire, destroying instruments, spit and vomit gags, bloody injuries–we’ve seen and heard this all about BL before and they’re making fun of it. I’m embarrassed to say when I interviewed Cole, the first question I asked was “The wildest thing you’ve heard that you’ve done onstage?” Being such, there’s no coincidence that Cole performs a mock suicide at the end. Kinda like, “They Threw Us in a Trench and Put a Monument on Top.”
