Parts of Real Emotional Trash are real good. Such as “Out Of Reaches,” a song that’s become a favorite around here after we got all premature on Malkmus & The Jicks. It’s a treat then to see the song soundchecked via this clip filmed by Katie Stanford at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall way back in December.

The final “I know the tide will turn”‘s so tender and knowing, Mr. Malkmus. A much mellower place than “Baltimore,” for sure. They really do sound great …. and effortless. We like that Janet’s so smiley. She should start a percussion ensemble with Against Me!’s drummer.

Real Emotional Trash is out 3/5 on Matador.

  1. I have an irrational attachment to these new songs…

  2. The album’s bookends, Dragonfly and Wicked Wanda, are good enough for me, though nothing to write home about about. But everything in between is killing me! If I don’t listen to Cold Son several times a day my staff catches hell.
