EMA - "Marked" Video

“Marked” is almost certainly the most intense song on EMA’s very intense — and fucking incredible — debut album Past Life Martyred Saints. The track now has a video, and unlike EMA’s previous videos, it’s not a lo-fi affair. It’s shot in exquisite black-and-white, with Erika M. Anderson herself co-directing alongside Leif Shackelford, and it pulls a neat gender-flipped inversion of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted To Love” video. After the a whole lot of extreme close-ups, we get the big reveal: EMA singing while a band of empty-eyed crossdressing dudes plays behind her. It’s an extremely striking series of images, and it’s here.

Past Life Martyred Saints is out now on Souterrain Transmissions, and you really need to hear it if you haven’t already. Can we get a “Red Star” video next? Please?

Sometimes seeing a video makes you enjoy a song much more, and that’s how I feel about this one. Initially, it was the louder and faster cuts off Part Life Martyred Saints that drew me to EMA but over time, it’s these slow, broken-hearted beautiful singles that stick with me.

  2. I don’t usually log in to comment on Stereogum, but this song is too terrible to ignore. It’s just poorly made, poorly orchestrated pretentious crap over two chords. “My arms are plastic… my arms are glass.” Well then get some new freaking arms. Crying about your arms isn’t going to bring them back. Jesus.

  3. you know what this reminds me of? snow patrol on downers.
