This morning, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame announced its nominees for 2012 induction. This year, we’ve got some intriguing new names on the list, including Guns N’ Roses, the Cure, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric B. & Rakim, and Joan Jett And The Blackhearts. It also includes a few artists who have previously been nominated, including the Beastie Boys and Donna Summer.
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after releasing a single or album, and only eight of the 15 nominees will actually make it into the Hall. And as silly as this whole process is, I have to say that it would be amazing to see Eric B. & Rakim, in all their fur-coat-and-dookie-rope glory, up on that stage. If the Beasties couldn’t make it in their first time around, though, I don’t have a whole lot of hope for that happening.
The only artists who seem like first-ballot locks for inclusion, given the Hall’s well-documented biases, are probably Guns N’ Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. So the induction ceremony is probably our best hope for seeing Axl Rose appearing in public with any other founding GN’R members, although even that probably still won’t happen. We’ve got the full list of nominees below.
Beastie Boys
The Cure
Donovan
Eric B. & Rakim
Guns N’ Roses
Heart
Joan Jett And The Blackhearts
Freddie King
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rufus With Chaka Khan
The Small Faces/The Faces
The Spinners
Donna Summer
War

Everyone pour out a little on the sidewalk for perennial also-rans Chic, who didn’t even make the long list this time.

Where is RUSH??????
Agreed. The list of bands entering before Rush even has a nomination is maddening. I suspect they keep them off the roster just to get mentioned in circles they might not otherwise reach.
I went to the Hall 5 or 6 years ago and they had a huge Rush exhibit – a whole drum setup, etc… So much Rush stuff on the floor, yet they weren’t members. Odd.
What a pleasant surprise to see the Cure nominated.
RCHP was nominated a few years back, but you guys seem to write like this was their first nomination…
HOW DARE YOU, TOM! HOW DARE YOU.
I was thinking about mentioning the Replacements, T. Rex, or the Jam, but then I remembered that I didn’t care.
Completely irrelevant without the Replacements
Where’s Neutral Milk Hotel??
Unfortunately I don’t think that will ever happen :(
also, it hasn’t been 25 years so theyre not elligible. but yeah it’ll never happen
I’m pulling for RHCP. It’d be awesome to maybe have a chance for a performance with Froosh one more time.
the froosh fucking rules!!!!!!!
Hell yeah! I played along with all the chili peppers albums back in high school. John was basically my guitar teacher.
I have this sneaky feeling that Joan Jett will be chosen. Lots of great bands here though.
Good class overall. obviously some names are missing, but happy with the Cure, Beastie Boys and RHCP even though I’m not too sure they’ll get in this year. RHCP have a good shot since it’s their second nomination so I’ll be rooting for them
Laura Nyro seriously needs to be recognised for her contribution to music.
I highly recommend you SPIN’s version of “Premature Evaluation” called “First Listen” (the article is actually bit older including an excluded or probably renamed track called “Woe Be”) if you look for a little more detailed track evaluation. http://www.spin.com/articles/first-listen-feists-new-album-metals
Oh, sorry, wrong article. I actually referred it to the Feist Premature article.
I am waiting for Ken Griffey Jr. to be eligible.
There are a lot of better acts than most of these nominees that still haven’t been inducted. Regardless, I’d say The Cure, Beastie Boys, or Joan Jett should be inducted.
Small Faces/The Faces, huh? I’ll admit that is unexpectedly nice to see. Quite a few of these singers/bands probably deserve their place in the Hall.
Should Get In:
Beastie Boys
The Cure
Eric B. & Rakim
Freddie King
Joan Jett And The Blackhearts
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Small Faces/The Faces
The Spinners
Will Get In:
Donovan
Guns N’ Roses
Heart
Joan Jett And The Blackhearts
Laura Nyro
Rufus With Chaka Khan
Donna Summer
War
I’m happy if the Cure get in, or Donna Summer.
little bit of pearl jam anyone?
No Sonic Youth or Jesus and Mary Chain?
I’m really pleased to see the Chili Peppers not getting too much hate on this blog.
Mystikal will be eligible next year and I for one will be outraged if he’s not nominated and inducted. With classics like “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against the Wall)”, “There He Go” and “Neck uv da Woods”, the Rock and Roll Hall would be disgraced without giving the No Limit Soldier his due.

What’s going on with Duran Duran not being inducted?? Over 100 million records sold, 31 years of history, and numerous platinum records!! Are you kidding me??? It’s about time they get recognized!!
The RnR HOF is a complete Joke. I’d like to see The Beastie Boys and RHCP and The Cure boycott. I would. Who gives a flying F&ck what filthy rich record execs believe is good?
Not me
