Depeche Mode - "Enjoy The Silence"

The viral-video feelgood story and lite-FM radio star Susan Boyle has done something vaguely unexpected on her new album. She’s included a cover of “Enjoy The Silence,” Depeche Mode’s classic 1990 Violator single. “Enjoy The Silence” was a massive song, and Boyle’s quietly tasteful version isn’t a huge stretch, so it’s not like she’s singing “Fly On The Windscreen” here. But it’s something! Also, Boyle’s version is totally pretty in a way that my grandma could probably appreciate.

Talking to Rolling Stone about the choice in cover songs, Boyle says, “The melody of the song is just beautiful, but really that lyric sounds like it will touch so many people in the way it touched me.” Given that Depeche Mode’s original isn’t especially ironic, this doesn’t seem to be another “Perfect Day” case where she totally gets the intent of the song wrong.

  1. If this SuBoyle cover means there’s now a slight chance I might walk into my aunt’s house on Christmas to the sounds of “Personal Jesus” instead of Jackie Evancho, I’ll take it.

  2. Strange, I kinda like it.

  3. I’m trying to be polite and restrained here, but please someone make her stop!
