Anton Corbijn To Direct Coldplay Webcast

Anton Corbijn, the Dutch filmmaker whose credits include The American and Control, will return to his music video roots to direct the broadcast of Coldplay’s 10/26 Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas show in Madrid (yes, that venue is indeed a bullfighting ring) for American Express Unstaged. Hardly the first to dabble in the webcast game, Corbijn will direct 12 cameras during the concert, which will be broadcast on VEVO a couple of days after Mylo Xyloto comes out. Some context:

In a telephone interview, Mr. Corbijn described a recent visit to the bullring (“My star sign is Taurus, so I was a little hesitant going in there”) and said it was a “fantastic place” for a rock concert.

“Usually when you play to 15 or 20,000 people, the arenas tend to be elongated, and this is round and it’s very high up, so there’s a wall of people around you.” Mr. Corbijn said, adding: “Spanish people tend to be very enthusiastic at concerts, and you get incredible energy from them. I would prefer it to Amsterdam.”

Werner Herzog, your move.

Mylo Xyloto is out 10/24 on Capitol. The first two singles, “Paradise” and “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall,” have been out for a little while.

  1. Wasn’t Every Teardrop is a Waterfall the first single?

  2. The U2 ambitions of Coldplay never cease, moving on to U2′s go to photographer/director for decades. I’m surprised they didn’t name themselves U3.
