Did you know Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto came out this week? The band played Letterman and Colbert and Today and Jools and Ellen and we threw a party in their honor. The launch celebration continues tonight in a Anton Corbijn-directed Vevo webcast from Madrid’s Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas beginning at 4PM EST. Since the anticipation is killing us, we thought now would be a good time to compile ten of the most relistenable versions of the band’s sentimental megahits, of which there have been a lot…
10 Pet Shop Boys – “Viva La Vida”/”Domino Dancing”
09 Scala & Kolacny Brothers – “Yellow”
08 Ellie Goulding – “Don’t Panic”
07 Alicia Keys – “Clocks”
06 Noah & The Whale – “Paradise”
05 Weezer – “Viva La Vida”
04 Robyn – “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”
03 Willie Nelson – “The Scientist”
02 Mark Ronson (Feat. Daptone Horns) – “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face”
01 Aimee Mann – “The Scientist”
Apologies to Avril Lavigne, Mike Posner, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, U2, Natasha Bedingfield, Sara Bareilles, Little Big Town, the Kooks, Pixie Lott, Solange, Mike Gordon, et al. That Noah & The Whale cover is two days old, btw. So who did I miss?

It’s #3… ?
Scott, you guys should do a story on that Willie Nelson Chipotle commercial, I think it’s a Coldplay cover.

Hey, his names “Chris Martin” I think he has the right to not like any of it….
This is a weird list, though it is nice to see Aimee Mann be #1 on any list…
Enjoyed #2 a lot :-)
That Noah & The Whale cover makes Paradise so much easier to listen to.
yes!
Coldplay? Never heard of ‘em.
I guess all these artists are trying to be ‘cool’ by covering a song by some weird underground ‘indie’ group, eh? There’s some catchy stuff here, though… maybe I’ll check out The Coldplays. Do they have a myspace?
The one by Mark Ronson is awesome to the max! Sounds like it should be chase music in an old Bond film!
I like Johnette Napolitano’s (of Concrete Blonde fame) cover of “The Scientist” quite a bit.
Stereogum even covered it!

oh Noah, you have the most irritating voice, can’t you build another Ark and sail off the edge of the world. (and give The Whale back to Jonah).
Petra Haden doing “Yellow” is awesome. http://open.spotify.com/track/40WYkfPexGtGgyOGvNUOMS
Frank Ocean’s cover/remix of “Strawberry Swing” is pretty great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvFtbjIngkY
Abram Brothers bluegrass cover of Viva La Vida ain’t too shabby, although the video is total low-budget Canadian garbage.

What about the block beattaz produced song that sampled “clocks” ? Coldplay aren’t my thing but they still have influence.
Joe Satriani does a very good cover of Viva La Vida. And Cat Stevens does a very good cover of Satriani’s cover. Its the cover that keeps giving!
Jem – Yellow

Agree. Excellent.
don’t know what to think about Mylo after a couple of days… i am a huge Viva or Death fan and… this just isn’t cutting it for me.
on topic – missed out on that willie nelson cut – very nice.
and agreed, paradise is much easier to swallow here. it’s a couple of things i like to call “subtlety” and “tone”.
my best friend’s aunt makes $70/hr on the laptop. She has been out of work for 6 months but last month her check was $8183 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read this site NuttyRich.cöm
Just curious. How do you guys get permission to make these available for download?
The Mark Ronson cover is the best one!
Yellow by Jem
I wonder if Chris Martin believes that, when he and the band perform the songs live, they are doing the best Coldplay covers ever.
I’m not really a huge fan of Coldplay but some of these covers are really nice :)
what, no creaky boards?
I can’t believe you didn’t include the Richard Cheese version of Yellow. An upbeat Latin classic – http://youtu.be/zIITnDtrdrM
The Mark Ronson one is neat. Really does sound like a spy theme
Going at the “Speed of Sound”, James Bond “Parachutes” into “Amsterdam” and races against the “Clocks” to bring a man known only as “The Scientist” to justice, but he gets “Lost!” and turns “Yellow” with fear. Luckily there are some “Lovers in Japan” who tell him “Don’t Panic”, and that “God Put a Smile On Your Face”. And so as “Daylight” comes up Bond receives a “Warning Sign” and hurries off to do battle, stopping briefly due to a “Rush of Blood to the Head”. Upon meeting his foe, Bond pokes out the man’s “Green Eyes” with the help of “Spies” and defeats the bad guy hanging him from the “Strawberry Swing”. Finding his Bond girl in the rubble, Bond tells her that this is “The Hardest Part”, and that she should try to “Vive la Vida”. But before they can kiss and discuss “Politik”, a Mylo Xyloto drops on them and crushes them both. The End.
2 Cellos new album is coming out on 1/15 and they will be covering a Coldplay song on it. In the mean time, check out their version of “Highway to Hell” featuring Steve Vai!
