The Dead Weather @ Third Man Records, Los Angeles 8/26/09

As record stores shutter across the country, Jack White’s delightfully retro Third Man Records & Novelties is thriving. It’s a simple strategy for retail success: keep the store open for only three days and host free performances by the Dead Weather. In July, Third Man set up a pop-up shop in NYC’s LES; this week it’s taking over the the Regent Theater in downtown LA. Wednesday was the grand opening, and tomorrow is the grand closing, so head over if you’re in the market for some novelties. Yesterday afternoon found Jack White and Jack Lawrence briefly in costume as one another (“the Ol’ Switcheroo” is the industry term I believe) before joining Alison and Dean for a set, all as lead-up to their Mayan Theatre gig in the evening. Speaking of Jack White costumes, you have a few days to win his outfit from the “Treat Me Like Your Mother” video. The Dead Weather play the Glasshouse in Pomona tonight at outside Jimmy Kimmel Live! Friday. Brendan Benson recently told Spin that the Raconteurs are on an indefinite break, so expect Jack White to announce a new band momentarily.

UPDATE: Here’s that Kimmel clip:
