The Mountain Goats

The Mountain Goats usually maintain a freaky level of productiveness, but frontman John Darnielle became a dad a few months ago (congrats, sir!), and I wasn’t expecting to hear a note from him anytime soon. In between diaper runs, however, Darnielle has taken the time to bless his Twitter followers with a new track, “Thucydides II-58.” The track returns Darnielle to his lo-fi roots: Just his voice and acoustic guitar, with someone joining in on harmonies toward the end. It sounds great.

Darnielle posted the track on his Twitter last night when he realized that his followers numbered 25,000. And according to the man himself, he’s got more on the way: “This song was what we call a ’false start,’ I had a whole concept for a project I’ll be announcing soon but it went in another direction.” Cannot wait. Download the track below.

Earlier this year, the Mountain Goats released the truly top-notch All Eternals Deck on Merge. If you were sleeping on it, please stop.
