Last night in Paris, the legendary Britpop band canceled its second festival gig in a week then broke up, following the 10,000th altercation between its ornery figureheads. I have a hard time believing these clowns are done, but the previous times Noel cried wolf there was no official Web post like this:

The Brooklyn band were also playing the event and had the dressing room next to the Manchester band where the incident occurred.
Keyboard player Rostam Batmanglij would not be drawn on the specifics but, speaking to NME.COM at the Leeds Festival, he said: “It’s a story for Oasis to tell. We’d just come offstage. It was weird – you feel kind of good [having played], your mind is not in other people’s problems. It was a strange time.”
Drummer Chris Tomson added that many fans at the event took the news badly, after organisers announced there had been an “altercation” and that Oasis would not play.
“There were some people out in the crowd crying, we went and consoled them,” he explained. “They put that sign on the screen, saying there’s been an altercation in the band. We saw some people in the front row starting to cry. They were sad – they wanted to see Oasis.”
Vampire Weekend are shitty gossipers. Ezra also tweeted, “‘they’re upset?? I just lost a week’s wages!’ – oasis’ bus driver as we watched 40,000 people groan/boo”
We await Liam’s side of the story. Noel is already working on a solo album.

Dearly beloved, it is with a heavy heart and a sad face that I say this to you this morning.
As of last Friday the 28th August, I have been forced to leave the Manchester rock’n'roll pop group Oasis.
The details are not important and of too great a number to list. But I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and band mates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new.
I would like firstly to offer my apologies to them kids in Paris who’d paid money and waited all day to see us only to be let down AGAIN by the band. Apologies are probably not enough, I know, but I’m afraid it’s all I’ve got.
While I’m on the subject, I’d like to say to the good people of V Festival that experienced the same thing. Again, I can only apologise – although I don’t know why, it was nothing to do with me. I was match fit and ready to be brilliant. Alas, other people in the group weren’t up to it.
In closing I would like to thank all the Oasis fans, all over the world. The last 18 years have been truly, truly amazing (and I hate that word, but today is the one time I’ll deem it appropriate). A dream come true. I take with me glorious memories.
Now, if you’ll excuse me I have a family and a football team to indulge.
I’ll see you somewhere down the road. It’s been a fuckin’ pleasure.

I do feel really bad for those fans though. I’ve always hated this band, but I can imagine how lousy that must have felt. You’re all excited to see your favorite band play tonight, there’s a ton of people there, you’re all pumped up and emotional, and then they just cancel the show right in your fucking face. Shitty.
But whatever. Fuck these guys. At least now we can finally be rid of their cheesy “bad boy” image and their vapid melodrama.
Now that Andy Bell is free I sure hope he reforms Hurricane #1! Haha KIDDING.

Are you guys serious?! Even YOU hardcore Oasis-fans should have seen this coming years ago! And on a side note, Liam must be one heck of a mega-asshole if even his own brother can no longer stand him. I always figured there was no bigger asshole in the face of this earth than Axl Rose. I was obviously wrong.
Guess that makes Noel the Slash to Liam’s Axl. Maybe that means we’ll have to wait 17 years for the next Oasis album.

Noel had recently commented that he would like to try a solo album before he does anything with Oasis again. I can’t see this being the end of Oasis, but instead is a ploy by Noel to show his brother that he’d be a bum without him.
Noel knows he has the talent for a successful solo career and that Liam could never make a full decent album. Noel knows he doesn’t need Liam and Liam’s shit, so this is Noel’s way to say that he has other options.

i dono. i love wonderwall. it’s weird that there’s multiple comments like this one, as nobody (up to this point) has said anything negative about oasis’ music. their singles off of what’s the story (morning glory)? are pretty integral in what got me hooked on alternative radio in the fifth grade, and, therefore, fairly influential in the music i listen to today, though they themselves may be not-so-conspicuously missing from it. so, i don’t know. i guess what i’m trying to say is, tone it down?

I’m sure a bunch of good riddance comments and a bunch of obnoxious fanboy statements are on the way, but when I think of Oasis, I think of one tragic fall from grace. The first two albums were great, but then they went into a slump for a long while. I’m disappointed because the last two albums were showing some promise of them becoming a great band once again.
Whenever Oasis is mentioned there is a massive outpooring of hate of these message boards. Noel Gallagher is an amazing songwriter and his songs have a big place in a lot of people’s hearts. According to some of the people on these boards, that makes them tragically uncool.
Sure it’s so much more hip to be into the latest ‘indie’ flavour of the week, but to diminish the impact of Oasis’s music with typical hipster bullshit convinces me more than ever than the Tin Man fans who champion (I’ll use the example of what come to symbolize the worthless hipster hype of ‘indie’ blog bands – Wavves) or any of that shit are laughable in their musical insecurity and attempt to achieve coolness.

Sad for fans, but these dudes Noel and Liam I mean, who else is in Oasis? were asshats I’ve never seen or read an interview where they weren’t raging pricks. They seemed to have an over inflated sense of worth as well… slagging off other bands while being a cunt hair above a cover/remix band is some ballsy ass shit.
I’ve never understood why Oasis is so goddamn easy to hate. It’s certainly a share of people who love them, but I think the group who seriously and wholeheartedly HATE them strangely enough is bigger. I have always liked Oasis, and even though I understand why people don’t, I find the amount and intensity of the messages they pour out on the web pretty extraordinary. It’s only rock’n'roll, nothing more and nothing less. Why do their music make grown people act like clowns on the internet?
As for the breakup of the band, I really don’t care. I find the things I like about Oasis in their first three or four albums. And even though Dig Out Your Soul is ok, it’s hardly relevant. I think a Noel solo album (and even a similar release by Liam) would be far more interesting. I’m grateful for the good times, but it was probably a good idea to call it a day before the end of this decade.

I don’t hate Oasis because of some contrived indie-hipster thing. Many of my most favorite bands are mainstream and/or on major labels. I just don’t think their music is that impressive. I did like Wonderwall a lot, I mean, who doesn’t? But so much of their stuff, even their early “classic albums,” just seem sort of boringly pleasent.
That’s not why I “hate” them though. Their songs are too mediocre to even inspire such an intense feeling in me. I think Coldplay’s boring too, but I could never feel “hatred” for them, because they seem like nice enough people, they just happen to make really bad music.
With Oasis, it’s because of their attitude and personality. They’re such assholes. Every time I stumble upon an interview with them, I always end up thinking, “Wow. I hate these fucking people.” It’s not an “indie-scene” thing, or a hipster thing. Hell, I hate them for the same reason I hate Crystal Castles: they’re awful fucking people who should be forced to work at McDonalds for the rest of their shitty lives..
Now, I understand that lots of people are really touched by Oasis’ music. That’s great. I’m just saying how I feel about them.

the other thing people seem to hate is their attitude. first of all Liam is no Noel. Noel talks and knows a lot about music. the thing is many americans don’t get the way they talk. though they are not macho or whatever, theay are not art-school students. and in the states you are rather one or the other it seems. they are workin’ class rockers. stone roses, the stones, jam, that’s the world they grew up in ol’ dirty poor Manchester.

WTF? I am so mad. I wanted to see Oasis last year in concert at Madison Square Garden but my mom didn’t let me go because it was on a Wednesday but I’d figured I’d get another chance. I guess I won’t. They finally made their most ambitious album with an original sound and the driving force of the band is gone? If he was having problems with Liam, Liam should have gone instead. Oasis is Noel’s fucking band. Noel Gallagher IS Oasis. Ironic that everyone who played on the MTV Unplugged show as Oasis is gone (Guigsy, Bonehead, Alan White, and now Noel).
Blur reunite, Oasis breaks up and Jarvis is still kicking ass all by his lonesome. Yup, sounds about right.
I am more upset by this than I care to admit.
I think a lot of people hate these guys because they talked so much shit about other bands. Their 1st 2 albums and their early shows were quite good. After that, it all seemed to go to their head. In Europe they are one of the biggest all time bands – still! Saw them at Roseland Ballroom in ’02 and they were great. Next time at MSG, not so great. Go solo Noel, ditch your idiot brother.
Let’s face it – Laim was an arsehole long before Oasis hit the charts – witness him starting a fight with the crowd in Newcastle in about 93 or so. The only real surprise is that Noel put up with him for so long.
As for the music – they’ve never made a good album but there are enough high points on the first couple to make them more than a foot note – and that has been enough for plenty of other acts to cement their place in history. But they have managed to lift their sound above the inevitable Status Quo comparisons for more than 13 years so – really – what is the story here?
I don’t know man, Be Here Now is one of the most underrated albums of all time.
As much as the middle section of their albums blew (bar a few outstanding tracks) their impact on music in the UK was unrivaled. The Smiths and roses ect were great bands but they didn’t inject the sort of influence that oasis did to ‘the business’. Guitar music was dying in the UK before they came along. Every A&r man was looking for the next pop hit sensation and little money was being put to ‘guitar music’ then creation (an indie label) took a punt on Oasis and it all changed, the public lapped it up and from then on every A&R man wanted the next guitar band. Hell, even radiohead were about to be dumped (after first listening of OK computer) by their record label until they saw the potential of money they could make from guitar bands, they realized that from Oasis (and blur) they could offer the highbrow alternative. Yes Radiohead were around for a long time before, but they certainly would never have hit the hights they did without Oasis. The same goes for the whole intelectual indie rock scene.
As strange as it sounds, in the Uk Oasis made the youth feel it was possible to achive anything and at that time the youth were really struggling to get even a university education, on the back of the flood, the labour party came into power and the kids had the possibilty to study, hence their intellect went up and you got a rush of intellectual youth who started bands (your bloc parties etc).
Also at this time magazines like NME (as much as i hate them) were about to go out of business, suddenly oasis came along and it was the magazine of choice to read, it kept the magazine afloat on the back of the blur oasis rivalry and then of course went on to open our ears to many more bands since.
I even doubt the existence of this blog had it not been for bands like Oasis, blur and Radiohead. Most of the bands you write about would have been influenced or impacted by them somewhere along the way.
And yes the American market had, had a hit with Nirvana etc, but that had also come and gone very quickly due to the death of Cobain. Oasis were the next band that people could latch onto and from there it all exploded.
Obviously i’m not saying guitar music wouldn’t have existed, but the form, health and need for live music we have today is in a small way down to these bands.

As for the age old beatles comparison… yes there were similarities, but you’ve also got to thank bands like Oasis for keeping the memory of the beatles alive and relevant today.

I’d certainly say it was a good thing. At the time most teenagers were either getting stuck inside playing computer games or were out selling drugs or stealing (i know this because i grew up under these circumstances as a working class brit), before oasis came along you would have been called a fag for playing the guitar or any instrument, Oasis made it cool again.
Yes the results of these new bands weren’t always great but most of the music (british bands) you hear about on this site will have started because of this fact.
I agree with some (not all) of your points here but I feel that if Oasis had broken up way back after What’s The Story (Morning Glory) or even Be Here Now, then they would’ve been respected by all and would have had more of an impact on other bands today. The quality of music released after Be Here Now wasn’t up to par with what they had already released. I’ve given many listens to their latest album but it just doesn’t have that same spark that Oasis used to have. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I don’t hate Oasis at all, I’ve been a fan since I first heard Live Forever & Rock ‘N Roll Star but these two brothers and their personal problems did nothing but tarnished what was once one of the greatest rock bands to have come out of England in the early 90s. I always wanted to believe Oasis would somehow be able to release an incredible album and now that Noel quit the band, I know they never will.

I have loved Oasis all along…yes they’re arrogant at times but they are great fun. I think some people on here probably haven’t heard a lot of their records in the first place-Dig Out Your Soul, their most recent lp, was excellent in my opinion.
Oasis will be long remembered. The first two albums are classics and they were still outputting some great stuff just recently. They still had a lot of offer but I can’t say that I’m surprised to see that they broke up. It was a long time coming with how often Noel & Liam fought, but that doesn’t mean that the news isn’t sad.
This news is only sad if Noel doesn’t start his solo album after his football season. Gem and Andy will get around. Liam may do something too…but I don’t know. I can’t wait to see what happens.
This seems like it’s been brewing for the past few months, what with stories of them no longer speaking or seeing each other except when onstage. Not to mention having digs at each other via blog (Noel) and Twitter (Liam). Given those circumstances, the ideal scenario would’ve been for them to finish their live dates and take a break, see how things go from there. Unfortunately (and I say that as a fan of the band, obviously), the fight seems to have shut the door on them getting back together and working things out.
I suppose it’s possible for Liam and the others to carry on as Oasis, if only to prove that all the doubters wrong and maybe even out of spite towards Noel. But I’d be pessimistic about their chances of still being as big as they have been.

Why do people even care about these guys when Teenage Fanclub have been doing what they do 1000 times better for 20 years now? Plus none of that annoying douche-baggery. The worst aspect of this story is that Oasis will prolly reunite by the end of this year. They are like the Brett Favre’s of the rock world…they refuse to exit with dignity.
Oasis, like Urkel, will be long remembered for its contributions to the arts.
It’s not a ton of bands that last 18 years, and those bands don’t have Liam Gallagher. It’s something like a miracle that they lasted as long as they did. Think about it: how many bands (not solo artists) that have debuted in the last couple of years do you realistically think will still be together, let alone playing festivals, circa 2030?
That being said, “get me cape”… “them kids”? I knew Noel sorta talked like a pirate, didn’t know he wrote like one, too.
i remember listening to definitely maybe in a paris cafe in 1994 and just in amazement with how massive the sound was. i was also into pavement and punk rock at the time but i loved oasis. i loved morning glory, be here now, and even standing on the shoulders. i forgot about them during the first half of this decade but the last album was fantastic.
not only have they influenced pretty much every british band that have come out since, but they have been a huge influence on my style and many other people’s style.
i have nothing but respect for them. liam is a piece of shit but he’s a good singer. noel wrote and played amazing songs and i wish him the best.
I hate to think that Oasis are breaking up, especially with all the promise they showed on the last two albums, but I am looking forward to hear a solo album from Noel. Several songs that he’s played at soundchecks sound especially good. Liam can’t sing anymore anyway.

How many of the boring bands discussed on this site that have 2 good songs that oh …sell out the bowery and amazingly disappear after they release a shitty 2nd CD. Most bands would cut off their left ball to even remotely achieve the level of success and have the type of impact on popular culture that Oasis have enjoyed. Bloc Party are ridiculous. Intimacy was a colossally average record and the remix LP that they made for it was just awful.
The irony of the whole thing was that Bloc Party’s guitarist started playing Supersonic because he knew it by heart, so you know these guys grew up with Oasis. While they are pretty good, the arrogance they put on display isn’t suitable for a band of their stature. Bloc Party will never write a Wonderwall, Champagne Supernova, or Live Forever.

Let me tell you a little story about how important Oasis is to pop culture…
I was on tour with my band in England 2 years ago… we were staying in a rehearsal studio called Rooz..
During a late night party I started arguing with my band about how important Oasis were to British Culture.. I am a huge Oasis fan and my band is totally not… and they hate Oasis for all the same retarded reasons that most Americans hate on them for.
SO all the British people listening in on the conversation start backing me up… So I decide to bust out my guitar and play a few Oasis B-sides…
From the very first chords the whole room started singing “take me away” and “going nowhere”
My band shut the hell up after that..

Oasis’s mom said that she believes that Oasis will reconcile in a little while if that counts for anything. And if the band did carry on without Noel, it would probably be like the Foo Fighters calling themslves Nirvana or something like that.
