The hard-as-fuck Memphis rapper Don Trip is having a hell of a year. The 2009 in-studio video of him recording the heart-ripping “Letter To My Son” is a viral hit; now that it has a Cee-Lo chorus, the song itself threatens to become an actual hit. Step Brothers, Trip’s collaborative mixtape with fellow Tennessee rapper Starlito, is, I’d argue, one of the two or three best tapes of 2011. And now we’re getting “Do Work,” a fiery and excellent new collab with Mississippi’s David Banner.
Banner is a fundamentally great Southern snarler who’s spent much of the past decade making ill-advised pop moves in mostly-failed efforts to get larger audiences. “Do Work,” a bleepy, roaring banger with a like-minded collaborator on board, is exactly the sort of thing I wish he’d always do. Listen to it below.
