And art it is. On the front sleeve of the forthcoming Monsters Of Folk album is an illustration of the lite-indie superheroes’ beatific mugs, just beckoning you to listen to more NPR. Matthew Hollings rendered the drawing, and also scribbled a portrait of the four bro-ing down with arms on each other’s shoulders for the back cover. (The CD booklet features pictures by Autumn de Wilde as well as a complete set of lyrics.) Album’s out 9/22 via Shangri-La, and there’s a tour, but until then you can download “Say Please” and hear “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.),” and “The Sandman, The Brakeman, And Me” at your leisure.

    Yikes. This is hideous.

  2. evan  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2009

Is this a joke? Cause if it is, that’s pretty funny.

  3. I have no clue who the fourth guy is and I probably still won’t care no matter how good the album is (but probably won’t be.)

  4. steve  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2009

    they look like substitute teachers.

  5. John  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2009

That’s just lame. I actually thought it was going to be something worthy based on the headline.

  6. Wow not sure which is worse, the band name or the album cover?

  7. Bakes  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2009

Surely this will be be on Stereogum “Worst CD covers of ’09″ list? And maybe Arctic Monkeys’ “Humbug”? I look forward to seeing who “wins” this year. I also look forward to finding out who’ll finish fourth on the Best CD of ’09 list.

Wow, who pissed in everyone’s coffee this morning? I like it.

  9. Hey, the whole thing is fun and a little tongue-in-cheek. Think the Traveling Wiburys. And lighten up a little!

  10. Bakes  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2009

I bet James’ beard feels totally itchy, eh Mike?

  11. The dude in the right hand lower corner looks like he is reacting to the rest of the artwork!

    I Like It!!

  13. the delivery on this whole folk-joke is a catastrophe.

  14. RERT  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2009

Mogis obviously being the Jeff Lynne of the group

  15. Rob S.  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2009

This looks like a piece of art asking for contributions for a homeless shelter. Seriously. They all look like shifty vagrants. I’m even kind of sure the dude in the bottom left will stab you to steal your money for crack.

That, or this is a conservative pundit’s vision of Hell.

  16. I wonder which songs brian posehn sings on?

  17. Lilly  |   Posted on Sep 5th, 2009

I guess who ever designed this must like The Vines…

  18. At least they got the Monsters part right.

  19. yea, nasty for shureee.
I’m really upset with the band’s singles so far? get Conor back on vocals!
Actually, just get Conor back in Bright Eyes. :(

  20. I don’t absolutely love it or anything. But I don’t understand why everyone on this website hates things so much. I think I like this album art.

  21. I’m no hater but I’ll just be honest and say that the album artwork reminds me of the same recycled Four-window Beatles cover concept on Let it Be. Kinda of surprised by this. I would’ve like to see album artiwork that’s closer to what M. Ward did on his Hold Time album. Or something that’s a bit more creatve than this.

  22. Tyler  |   Posted on Sep 8th, 2009

I bet if they were all wearing flanel shirts you hipsters would like it or is that fad already out? Jesus, everyone here has to hate everything that gets posted. By the way the music is great which I thought is what mattered.

  23. It’s ugly.

  24. call me  |   Posted on Sep 8th, 2009

    M. Ward is SUCH a douche bag.

  25. Leif  |   Posted on Sep 9th, 2009

If they were going to be cheeky with the album cover and name of the band, I wish they would have gone full out and literally had pictures of monsters with horns, fangs, fur, tentacles, ect playing banjos, guitars, and some tasteful harmonica.

  27. Aaron  |   Posted on Sep 9th, 2009

    Fugly.

  28. kolby  |   Posted on Sep 10th, 2009

conor oberst: smeared nosebleed or kool-aid mustache?

  29. Bootyfish  |   Posted on Sep 10th, 2009

Yeah, Conor’s got punch mouth! It looks like he just came from some 8 year old’s birthday party.

  30. Bootyfish  |   Posted on Sep 10th, 2009

…And M. Ward was the clown!!! (at the 8 year old’s birthday party i mentioned)

  31. Bootyfish  |   Posted on Sep 10th, 2009

and Mike Mogus was the creepy pederast neighbor peeping over the fence!

    …ok i’m done.

  32. damn, M. Ward looks like such an asshole on this cover. a self-serious asshole.

    • electra  |   Posted on Sep 11th, 2009

think oberst is pissed someone stole his look? also, the brian posehn joke was totally worth googling.

  33. I’d be okay if Jim James and M Ward just kept playing together every once in a while and left the other two out of it.
