Q Magazine Best Albums

The year-end listpocalypse continues! Q, the British magazine that remains permanently in love with all things Oasis, has just published its list of the top 50 albums of 2011. And unlike today’s Paste list, Q drops Bon Iver, Bon Iver all the way down at #4. Florence & The Machine instead take the top spot on this list, and other way-popular types like Adele and Arctic Monkeys also do well. Coldplay inexplicably finishes at #4, which is just confusing. But for a rock magazine, Q has also made some effort to reach outside its comfort base, including stuff like Katy B, SBTRKT, and both Weeknd mixtapes. We’ve got the magazine’s full list below.

  1. Florence HAHAHAHAHAHA

    • shhh the girls might hear, they worship their over-rated brit queen:)

      • How very sexist of you, Mr. Pants. I for one am female and I cannot stand Florence.

With the exception of Bon Iver and PJ Harvey, this top 10 is dreadful. I like the St. Vincent album but it’s not top 10 material. Actually the whole list is dreadful. The notion of Noel Gallagher and Kasabian making relevant music in 2011 – brb loling forever.

        • well thank god theres a few of you:) she’s alright and all but my god, the girl comes out n does ONE album and all these american girls think shes the first brit girl with a strong voice n semi-interesting songs, it’s annoying, i think Goldfrapp and Ladytron kick her weird-faced arse:D

  2. I know the year isn’t over yet, but whatever happened to The Weeknd’s supposed third mixtape, Thursday?

    • Haha, wow, sorry everyone — I forgot that Thursday is already out and despite listening to it several times, I was confused. What I meant is “Where is Echoes of Silence?” And here I was thinking I was getting downvoted for no good reason…

  3. Subjectively, this is the worst list of all time.

    • I would agree. They lost me with No. 30. I think there was a time when I said I’d stop taking Q seriously when they said anything by Lady Gaga was better than Radiohead.

  5. Hey, at least they didn’t include Beady Eye. For a British rock mag, that’s something like progress.

  6. Ceremonials? Really? Whatever…. where is The Kills?????!!

  7. Ceremonials wasn’t a terrible album, but it definitely shouldn’t have topped this list. And Elbow in the top 10? Dd they assume that the first four songs were indicative of the rest of the album, and then stop listening?

  9. Q already awarded Bon Iver the album of the year: http://jagjaguwar.com/blog/tag/q-magazine/

How does that jibe with this list?

  11. this is the worst list i´ve seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Hey, finally some love for Gruff Rhys!

  13. OMFG, seriously this SUCK!

  14. Ceremonials deserved it, STFU

  15. Yeah, this list is generally disappointing, but on the other hand, I can’t really be mad at them because they actually recognized the greatness of Josh Pearson, who gets far too little attention.

  16. Ryan Adams, WILCO and the Jayhawks all missing.

  17. “The SECRETS OF COLDPLAY by CHRIS MARTIN!… and Gwyneth Paltrow”

    videogum would love that.

  18. Coldplay, Noel Gallagher, Ed Sheeran? And I don’t actually mind White Lies but that album was nowhere near the 22nd best of the year. Worst list I’ve seen in a looooong time.

  19. I’m surprised at how low James Blake is coming up on these first two lists. Backlash?

  20. Man, every post about some publications top list is just 1000 people wondering why x is on the list while y didn’t make the cut. I wish people were more positive and just respected the opinions of other people.

  21. Mastodon are awesome but seriously, rating The Hunter above any other metal album from this year is like rating Watch the Throne above any other hip-hop album (oh wait, Q did that also).

  22. I love lists.

  23. If you’re going to put Ed Sheeran at #27, then Ben Howard-Every Kingdom should have been pretty much near the top. Somewhat comparable styles of music but the quality of Ben Howard and Every Kingdom goes way beyond.

  24. don’t want to complain or wonder “where is….?” and “why…?” but this list makes me want to.

    At least they include SBTRKT.

  25. your magazine is as empty as your list.

  26. You do know that Q is a dullard Dad Rock mag don’t you ?

  27. Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

  28. The Antlers? Glaring omission..

  29. You mean Coldplay finishes at #5….

  30. Justice made this list but M83 didn’t!? What a joke!!

  31. Here’s a more appropriate list for you clowns to go off of:
    http://stereogum.com/890842/pastes-top-50-albums-of-2011/list/

  32. Where the hell is Fucked Up? They missed the best album of the year!

  33. I think its funny when these lists throw in the token random electronic album. Its obvious that they just pick one album that has the slightest bit of cross-over potential and call it a day. Not that I don’t like the SBTRKT album, but anyone who actually follows the electronic scene and listens to the major releases knows that Machinedrum – Room(s) and Sepalcure’s s/t debut are vastly superior albums and the best to come out of that amorphous UK Bass genre.

It’s like with Holy Ghost! on Paste’s list… Paste, you guys are into folksy indie rock. It’s okay. Own it. Holy Ghost’s album doesn’t even belong on a Top 50 list of purely electronic and dance albums, and that’s coming from someone that actually likes them.

Oh and M83 is album of the year, hands down.

  34. WORST LIST EVER!! forgot about WILCO!!!!!!!!!

  35. this list is a ridiculous thing to read

  36. Adele em 3º lugar?
    Pra mim perdeu a credibilidade!

  37. So much missing.. On a side note – Jay-Z & Kanye so high & no Kendrick Lamar or Shabazz Palaces – oops! There are some albums in there that I’ve really enjoyed this year but they’re all in the wrong order…

  38. Where is Take Care? That Horrors record is top ten worthy as well.

  39. Little Dragon’s RItual Union wasn’t their best but..it was better than Noel’s Birds album…and so was Neon Indian’s Era Extrana. In fact most things in general are better than Gallagher music.

  40. The fact that Wilco is completely missing immediately negates this entire list.

  41. Am I the only one who liked the TV on the Radio album?

  42. I can tell you the secrets of Coldplay without reading the magazine:

    1. Bribe Brian Eno into polishing a turd (which I thought wasn’t possible),
    2. Shamelessly rip off U2 (and not even when U2 was great),
    3. Throw in some operatic whoooo-aaaaa-ohhhhhhhhhs,
    4. Steal lyrics from a seventh grade girl’s diary, and
    5. Slap Rihanna on a “rock” album.

As for this list, I stopped reading once I saw that horrid new Justice album listed. What a travesty that thing is.

    • i wholeheartedly agree with everything except the Eno bribery. That just doesn’t make sense to me. Though I don’t like ALL of Eno’s albums, I highly doubt that he was “bribed” by Coldplay or anyone.

  43. Watch the Throne isn’t high enough tbh.

  44. I do not approve.

  45. Noah And The Whale’s Last Night On Earth might be the worst album of the year.

  46. Austra – Feel It Break should definitely have a spot on the list!

  47. WOW, i just got out of a coma but…this must be the greatest year in music of all-time?! *31* albums BETTER than Radiohead?!?! wowwww, praise the lord I must be in music heaven!!! (cough/snort/pats self on back for being a comedy genius)

  48. M83 is not even on there. What the hell man??

  49. These Top 50 lists need to Black the fuck UP
