In early November, Cloud Nothings released the first single from their forthcoming, Steve Albini-produced Attack On Memory, a track that showcased a rougher, more unhinged sound. Today they posted their second single, “Stay Useless,” a quick-hit garage jam brimming with hooks that recalls some of the band’s earliest work. Baldi explains the track to Rolling Stone:
‘Stay Nothing’ [sic] was my attempt at making a catchy pop song that was better than any other pop song I’ve written. I’m trying to take Cloud Nothings to different areas, songwriting-wise, so I figured I should try and finish off the ‘poppy’ songs with a bang.

Attack On Memory is out 1/24 on Carpark. A little while back, Dylan Baldi made us a playlist of songs that influenced the record for an installment of the Under The Influence series.

Song title and quote conflict. “Stay Useless” or “Stay Nothing”? Rolling Stone has it, too, so it’s not your fault that it’s a Friday afternoon, so you highlighted, copied and pasted instead of editing first…
Song is definitely “Stay Useless” but you’re right, the quote in RS says “Stay Nothing.” I put a sic in. Good catch.
…And today I finally learned what [sic] means. Thanks!
If this entire album is as great as the two songs I’ve heard from it, its going to be incredible. Like King of the Beach x 100. and I loved King of the Beach.
It’s catchy in a Superchunk-copy kind of way, but it’s hard to be catchier than “Didn’t You.” I’ve been humming that one for a year and a half.
Yeah, “Didn’t You” took catchy to a whole nother level. But that being said, the first two singles from this one are getting me pretty psyched.
