NYTimes implies that Thom Yorke, Bon Iver, Band Of Skulls, Grizzly Bear, and the Killers join DCFC in providing exclusive tracks to the Twilight sequel. “Among the plans for the movie is a national tour of Hot Topic stores with artists from the soundtrack.”

damn, that hot topic thing isn’t a joke. i can’t tell if that’s depressing or hilarious.

    • Seriously, imagine for a moment Thom Yorke touring Hot Topics all across America with the cast from Twilight, and tell me this isn’t more hillarious than it is depressing. It’s like they hunted them down in the forest, shot them with tranquilizers, and then brought them along in little cages. How can these artists not realize how off fan base this decision is? Are they honestly all watching Iron & Wine and thinking “Man, I need a piece of that action. We really missed the boat last time!”

I mean let’s be honest, when I heard Death Cab For Cutie was going to be on the soundtrack, I wasn’t really that surprised, because the majority of teenage girls like Death Cab For Cutie. Then when I found out Thom Yorke was going to be on it, I just figured “Well, the director’s probably a big Radiohead fan”(much like every other person is). Band of SKulls, another that I’m not surprised about because they’re pretty much Coldplay with longer hair and more indie cred. But Bon Iver!!! Why Justin??? And Grizzly Bear!!! Why??? Why couldn’t they just get the typical Indie bands that play on movie soundtracks to write exclusive songs like Doves, Vampire Weekend, My Morning Jacket, Wilco, etc. TISK TISK!!! Even TV On The Radio doesn’t do “sell-out” things like that, and they’re on a major label!!! FUCK THE TWILIGHT SERIES

the tour of hot topic stores has pushed me from the “who cares?” team into the “this whole twilight thing is lame” camp

  8. woof. if i were arctic monkeys, i’d be pissed.

  9. Also in: Nicholson Baker, Philip Roth, and Marilynne Robinson are writing the screenplay for Transformers 3. Meanwhile, Philip Seymour Hoffman is slated to star in High School Musical 4, and Tom Hanks is playing the leading role in the film adaptation of Dan Brown’s novels…. oh wait.

  10. Geez, what does New Moon think it is? Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist?

  11. Drab  |   Posted on Sep 17th, 2009

Laughed so hard at the hot topic tour I startled the man sitting next to me. Genius. So does this mean teenage goth girl indie cred goes up or that ours goes down

  12. Is this Twilight 2 or Garden State 2?

  13. Mr. Vernon come on you are better than that. this is so depressing. I don’t want to be associated with twilight or hop topic. I’m getting too old for this

  14. stefan  |   Posted on Sep 17th, 2009

What the hell indie rock? I thought you were cool.

  15. the people who made this twilight movie are some sick motherfuckers.

  16. I’m just happy we’re getting new songs from great artists like Bon Iver, DCFC, Yorke, Grizzly Bear, etc. A little weird that its through the Twilight soundtrack, but whatever..

  17. no…not my Bear. i’d like to cry. :-(

  18. I’m honestly concerned that tween Twilight fans are going to start showing up to these concerts, and nobody wants/deserves that.

  19. we are so fucked  |   Posted on Sep 18th, 2009

Now the goth girls will crowd around Bon Iver and Grizzly Bear. inb4 people call Bon Iver “Evanescence but a dude”.

  20. Nick Jonas (spy)  |   Posted on Sep 18th, 2009

And you thought Guitar Hero had a creative business model. I mean, a national tour at a specific retail chain for specific, highly established artists who, um, share a common interest in teen vampire literature. And most of the musicians are. . . good. Whatever works, music industry.

There really must’ve been a greater crossover between Radiohead and ICP fans than I could have ever imagined. Someone needs to get video of these performances ASAP.

    • green leaf  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2009

that was almost funny, but not quite

      • Rob S.  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2009

Was part of my post made you think it was a joke? ICP is a serious band. You don’t joke about ICP. Or you’re likely to get raped by a gang of fat, acne-ridden neckbeards with three-foot spikes for hair.

  22. coruthufuea  |   Posted on Sep 19th, 2009

    alright,
the fact is, the twilight franchise is a money-making miracle, especially for those in the music industry.
Pretty much everything associated with it makes bank and then some. Shouldn’t we be happy that indie musicians for once are getting to gorge on the buying power of pubescent teen girls? Let’s just be true fans and stick with these great musicians through this, and appreciate their music no matter where its found. Hopefully they will be able to focus on making great music after this ordeal, as they will definitely not have to worry about money or getting their name post-Twilight. Seriously whatever.

  23. Rob S.  |   Posted on Sep 19th, 2009

Oh, I’m happy for them. I just don’t wanna have to deal with mindless tweens at a concert. You can only hear the high-pitched squeal of “play that song from Twilight” so many times before you wanna smack the shit out of someone.

  24. shawn bradley  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2009

lemmings, i cant wait 4 the anco remix of this soundtrack; anco twilight soundtrack remix > giz bear soundtrack original

  25. And I, for one, welcome our new teen vampire loving tween overlords

  26. sobazaar  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2009

I’ve got nothing against my favorite bands making it rain, but really, Grizzly Bear? I’d rather you do a Mercedes commercial than debase yourself like this.

  27. i think if we knew how much money bon iver and grizzly bear were getting paid this would all make sense.

  28. Thom Yorke should do a studio version of old Nude the way it was supposed to be recorded. With organ, keyboard and glockenspiel.

  29. I just hope Michael McDonald shows up at Hot Topic with Grizzly Bear.

  30. Man this takes the cake for sure.. I would really hope that Thom of all people would say “sorry, ive got plans for the next year or 2″ and can’t make any of these Hot Topic shows. I don’t really know if he has sold out though..I mean he’s rich he can do whatever he wants. He doesn’t need the money. I really can’t pinpoint a reason for being involved with Twilight (unless he likes the series) but I hate Twilight and I agree that I hope Tweens don’t show up to Radiohead shows. That would be ridiculous. Some of the lesser known bands like Grizzly Bear, whom I have never heard of, probably need the money so they get a pass this time.

  31. i thought getting mad at artists for making money stopped seeming reasonable after we realized there was more to music then just punk rock?
or maybe that was just me?

  32. ah2mm2  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2009

all this naysaying is very ironic when it is reduced to coca cola’s “sounds of buzz” (look around), don’t you realize in our comments that we ourselves are participating in an even shallower corporate view of music and its fandom?

    • Sammmmmy  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2009

Oh man, i just use ad block all the time so I had no idea this blog looked like that… That is hilarious. I guess the better question is, why are you not using ad block? I never see any ads.

  34. Griffin  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2009

Damn it. There was gonna be a St. Vincent/Bon Iver collab in the movie I’m making in my head… I really hope that movie isn’t New Moon.

This is like bad karma for the whole indie goes mainstream thing…Theres an interesting piece
