St. Vincent on Portlandia

Portlandia is a show by, for, and about indie rock types, so it’s no surprise that indie big dogs show up in sketches every so often. This past weekend’s episode featured two. St. Vincent’s Annie Clark, who first collaborated with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein back when they were the online sketch duo ThunderAnt, played a model who showed off a proposed police-uniform redesign. Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock, meanwhile, played someone attempting to donate records to the local elementary school. Watch both of their sketches below.

Also, we asked Fred Armisen to name his 10 favorite Portland bands. Here’s what he gave us.
In no particular order:

  • Rebecca Gates
  • The Shins
  • Sleater-Kinney
  • The Decemberists
  • Helio Sequence
  • Modest Mouse
  • Elliott Smith
  • Quasi
  • Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks

Here’s Annie

Portlandia airs Fridays at 10 on IFC.

Those Portland duos need mo love!

  2. Am I the only one who recognized Joe Haege (31Knots, Tu Fawning, and recently Menomena) and his wife Corrina Repp (solo, and Tu Fawning also) in the same sketch Isaac Brock was in ?
They were pretty awesome and I love their music!

Also, weird Armisen didn’t mention Carrie’s current band too. (And yeah, Menomena, obviously, what was he thinking! And 31Knots too then.)

  3. That list needs more Thermals.

  4. Is Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks being listed separately supposed to be a hilarious joke or just an indicator of Armisen’s brazen disregard for the concept of lists of 10?

  5. ….just as my crush on St. Vincent was beginning to subside, he modeling pulls me back in.

  6. This was such a great opportunity for Fred to say he likes Everclear. Then everyone would come out and say how they “always liked Everclear.” Then Fred could have said, “Just kidding, you guys. I don’t really like Everclear, I was trying to prove a point.”

For the purposes of my own little world, I’m going to pretend that happened.

  7. can’t say that i agree with the shins, modest mouse, and sleater-kinney being called “portland bands.” they’re all transplants, with the latter two creating arguably their best work entirely outside the state of oregon. and although the jicks were formed in portland, i’m pretty much incapable of associating malkmus with any state other than california.

also, starfucker never gets any love.

  8. Annie werq that table.

  9. modest mouse is from is from washington state….

  10. Modest Mouse will always be from Washington in my eyes

  11. Goddammit I just want to punch Fred Armisen in the mouth. Just look at his face! It’s begging for a beat down.

    Fuck you, Armisen.

  12. top CURRENT bands? Cuzzz…no love for our dear dear Dandy Warhols? are they now…passe? (hey hey?)

  13. Love the show, but just cause some Portland indie rock musicians were lucky enough to make it onto the show doesn’t make it an “indie rock show” by any stretch. The show isn’t really “for” indie rock types either, they’re basically poking fun at the various denizens of Portland (feminist bookstore owners/dumpster divers/etc). Season 1 was seen by millions of people, and Fred/Carrie are basically doing some of the local musicians & bands a favor by giving them some exposure at the end of the day. Most of the ‘hip musician cameos’ are actually a distraction from the comedy of the show, because 75% of them can’t act for shit and you’re left with a semi-known-hipster-musician and you’re left there going “Oh yeah – that’s a guy from that mediocre band………hmmm”.

  14. Issac talks exactly like he sings
