Spiral Stairs’ The Real Feel opens with the bluesy rocker “True Love.” The song bounces along with a similar feel as Maltese T” (FKA “Maltese Terrier”). If those are the only two tracks you’ve heard from Scott Kannberg’s proper solo debut, you’ll get a better sense of the collection’s variety via “Stolen Pills.” It picks the pace up considerably. Ergo, its video carefully approximates what it’s like to nab (and then literally take) pills. There’s also a cameo from the album cover’s overdosed raccoon. Which makes this feel a bit more conceptual than expected.

The Real Feel is out 10/20 via Matador. You can currently stream it at ThinkIndie.com. SS is on tour, often in support of Bob Mould:

10/16 – Portland, OR @ Doug Fir Lounge #
10/18 – San Francisco, CA @ Treasure Island Music Festival
10/19 – Los Angeles, CA @ Troubadour #
10/20 – Solana Beach, CA @ Belly Up Tavern #

# w/ Bob Mould

And, of course, Spiral will soon be playing everywhere in the world with his other band.

Dan Haifley, Our Ocean Backyard: The Walton Lighthouse - Santa Cruz's new icon
The Walton Lighthouse is 41 1/2 feet tall as measured from the level pavement of the west jetty ... contained the lighthouse's electrical equipment plus a 42-step spiral staircase. Surrounding it was a network of reinforcing rods.

The first part of the song is really annoying to me, with guitar and bass parts on repeat. The chorus is just an idea repeated 4 times. Whoever is playing the guitar needs to get bitch-slapped.

  2. No love for Spiral? Jeez. I’m really digging the new album.

  3. that video was so sad. waa :(
