On Record Store Day, April 21, the Flaming Lips will release their new collaborative double-LP, which features assists from Bon Iver, Erykah Badu, and a whole ton of other people. On the same day, they’ll also release a 7″ single of their Soft Bulletin classic “A Spoonful Weighs A Ton.” And on that single’s flipside, Atlanta metal monsters Mastodon will cover the same song. A short video clip that features a few seconds of that cover has made its way online, and you can hear it below.

Like the Lips, Mastodon will also have a busy Record Store Day. They’ll also release a split 7″ with Feist, on which Mastodon and Feist will both cover songs from each other’s 2011 albums. Mastodon will do “A Commotion,” from Metals, and Feist will do “Black Tongue,” from The Hunter. Both of those covers have a pretty good shot at just being so awesome.

Yup, that definitely sounds like Mastodon covering “A Spoonful Weighs A Ton.”

  1. It says “Mastodon and Clipse will both cover songs from each other’s 2011 album.” I assume that’s not accurate, but it sure would be awesome

    • Derp. Fixed. Ever since that one Pitchfork festival where they played back-to-back and both slayed, I always pair Mastodon and Clipse up in my mind.

      • Was at that show. 2007. Unbelievable. Almost as unbelievable as GZA doing Liquid Swords and Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation back-to-back the day before.
