Lemonade by Von Pamer

Last we heard from Lemonade, the San Fran-rooted/Brooklyn-based polyglot dance outfit, the trio delivered a take on the 1994 R&B jam “The Place Where You Belong” by Shai. This was a placeholder, filling the space between their highly recommended Pure Moods EP, and today. Based on “Neptune,” the first single from their forthcoming True Panther LP Diver, the Shai cut was more of an aesthetic bridge than stopgap, a way to frame an obvious fascination and fixation on ’90s R&B within their thoroughly contemporary, digital lens. To those just learning about Lemonade’s synthesis of electronic pop and global rhythm, I say the pheromonically charged “Neptune” is the band’s finest moment, and a great place to start. For those who know something of them, I say “holy shit, Callan’s voice.”

The True Panther label cites “early 90′s R&B, UK 2-step Garage, Balearic house and NY freestyle” as the working reference points on Diver; “Neptune” hews close to the first in that list. “Neptune” and Diver also further an aquatic leitmotif in the band’s work, which you can also find, for instance, in the sampled splashes on “Lifted.” This new album is produced by Le Chev (Frankie Rose, Fischerspooner, SSION), who previously, gloriously, remixed the aforementioned “Lifted” — though his take was less about splishing waves and more about splishing champagne.

Anyway, this track. Take it. For the bedroom.

Diver is out 5/29 via True Panther. “Neptune” promises remixes by Mike Simonetti, Jacques Renault, and Sinjin Hawke.

  1. sweet. i’ve been wondering where the hell this band was for the last two years. “lifted” slowly but surely became one of my favorite tracks of 2010, and i still play it all the time.

  2. His voice does sound really good. Interesting they’re touring with Neon Indian, because that’s what his voice reminded me of on this song.

Glad they’re sticking with aquatic themes for their next LP. Pure Moods seems so long ago…

I still have high hopes for Lemonade. “Blissout” is a classic in my eyes.
