Anderson Cooper is better at showing up in disaster areas and looking concerned than probably any other person in the history of the human race. This means he’s probably not the person you want to be lambasting on Twitter. This, however, is what M.I.A. chose to do on Wednesday. And in the ensuing exchange, Cooper’s reaction was basically this: “Huh?” Check for the back-and-forth below.
M.I.A., in the midst of Tweeting about Sri Lankan politics: “@AndersonCooper called me a terrorist for speaking out, and expressed support for the SLgov when this was happening.”
Cooper: “What are you talking about?”
M.I.A.: “YOU CALLED ME A LADY TAMIL TIGER when i talked about tamil civilians dying, and u printed a retraction.” Here, she linked to a post from Cooper’s blog that republished another journal’s article with the offending phrase included.
Cooper: “You are mistaken. I never called you a terrorist. I don’t even know who you are other than the lady who sang at superbowl… By the way, I defended your fingerpointing at superbowl, so check your facts. I have no idea what you’re Tweeting about.”
M.I.A.: “Thank u for defending my finger.” She also asked him to watch a BBC documentary about the Tamil killing fields.
After that initial salvo, they tweeted a few more generally agreeable things at each other. So the hatchet is buried. Still, “the lady who sang at superbowl” is about the funniest and most condescending thing anyone has ever written about M.I.A.
