Modeselektor - "Berlin"

German production duo Modeselektor reference their hometown with this track, which appeared on last year’s album that they named after their label Monkeytown, so this may as well be the Modeselektor Statement Of Intent. As such, it is a prototypically severe and precise slice of stuttering, sterling, German IDM, with vocal snips from Miss Platnum, and now it has a cardboard-animation video (with monkeys, naturally) that has a charming little backstory. Basically, a graphic designer named François Chalet managed to get Modeselektor to play his wedding by calling to ask Monkeytown right when the label was looking for someone to make them a video. Here it is in Chalet’s words, and animation:

We want to get married, and we want Modeselektor to play there … They’ll NEVER come and play at a wedding … And we wouldn’t be able to afford them … Weeks later I emailed Monkeytown Records in order to prove to Meike, my future wife, that this idea will always stay an idea … One day later at the phone – Monkeytown: “You contacted us at the perfect moment – we urgently need a good video because someone flaked on us!” One Skype conversation with Modeselektor … 3 weeks of hard work and little sleep … cardboard everywhere … lots of computer crashes and … Modeselektor will play at our wedding – hurray!

Watch:

Modeselektor’s Monkeytown is out via Monkeytown. And congrats to the man and lady Chalet, for an auspicious start to their wedded life together.
