Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel

Many of us became very, very happy earlier this year when we learned that Fiona Apple was on her way back with new music. Her next album, which she’s given the endearingly ridiculous title The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, will arrive in June. (I’m pretty sure we’ll all just end up calling it The Idler Wheel.) The tracklist is also out in the world, and it includes the three songs that she debuted in a couple of magical SXSW performances last month. That’s the ugly-as-hell cover art above, and we’ve got that tracklist below.

TRACKLIST:
01 “Every Single Night
02 “Daredevil”
03 “Valentine
04 “Jonathan”
05 “Left Alone”
06 “Werewolf”
07 “Periphery”
08 “Regret”
09 “Anything We Want
10 “Hot Knife”
(via Consequence Of Sound)

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do is out 6/19 on Epic.

  1. We have to wait until June???

    • The song titles seem pretty cool. I’m just not sure how I feel about the album art. Brown / tan / orange color combo hues never do much for me and the Spirograph-like drawing style has been around the block one too many times at this point.

      • Michael_! You’re not going to base every comment around last night’s Raw? Come on dude! That shit was better than Wrestlemania!

Here, I’ll start you off. Fiona Apple’s back! Here comes the wracked emotional pain!

        • I’m very glad that Fiona Apple is back, but similar to what was evidenced on last night’s Raw, the image conveyed through her cover art is slightly cliché just as Lord Tenzai a.k.a. A-Train a.k.a. Prince Albert’s character conveys the umpteenth reinterpretation of Kwang or Hakushi.

          • Look man, as long as she keeps elbow-clubbing us in the head with incisive lyrics and then baldobombing us with big choruses, I’m on board, no matter how much salt her record label might throw on the cover.

  2. guarantee you she drew the cover herself because she was too lazy/scared to ask someone else to do it for her. This is not a knock at her, im just sayin, i know my girl! Cant wait.

  3. I, too, cannot wait for Stereogum’s Most Anticipated & Alphabetized Album of Second Quarter 2012!

  4. I actually rather enjoy the album art.

  5. Okay, okay downvoters, I’ve just got to ask. Why are we “very, very” happy that Fiona Apple is back from the 90′s? (or early 00′s, or whenever her Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-inspired music videos were coming on that channel that still had music videos on it at the time). Yes, she looks like a slightly more damaged, slightly more attractive Olsen twin. Yes, she has a sexy sister with an equally weird for the sake of having a weird name.

Uh, incisive lyrics? Like which? No beef with the album art. At this point, all the “cool” indie kids are getting away with bullshit pseudo-retro polaroid shots as cover art. This, at least, shows a bit more gumption. Endearingly ridiculous is the homeless guy who stands in the median selling newspapers while wearing a full on cowboy outfit (chaps and spurs included, despite the fact that it’s 110 out and he’s black). The album title is more “ridiculously pretentious”, which is the defining quality of this here Apple. The sad thing is that, in her absence, her schtick has been totally stolen by Deschanel, E.R. Wood, and that dreadful Joanna Newsome.

No offense intended, tom, cause I love much of your stuff, and the people around here are mostly intelligent in explaining why their opinion is more valuable than all the “bro’s” out there, but there is some shit shit going on lately. (Re: any new tracks by Sigur Ros or Dirty Projectors, that “most anticipated” spring & summer list)

    • “(or early 00′s, or whenever her Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-inspired music videos were coming on that channel that still had music videos on it at the time)”

“The sad thing is that, in her absence, her schtick has been totally stolen by Deschanel, E.R. Wood, and that dreadful Joanna Newsome.”

      Made me laugh.

    • I was about to hit that downthumb, but then you shit on Sigur Ros and The Dirty Projectors and now we’re friends.

      • Mr. WMP,

It’s an honor and a privilege, sir, but you’ll never make any friends by making friends with the likes of me.

  6. I’m pretty sure the album title is a bunch of answers from an Mad-Libs game she played….

  7. Who produced the album???
